OXFORD, Miss. – Head coach Joe Walker has announced the addition of three more student-athletes that will join the Ole Miss track and field team for the 2012-13 academic year.

   

   

Rebel Offense Posts Big Day
       
OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss offense pounded out 20 hits and scored 15 runs, as the Rebels split a doubleheader against Belmont and Murray State on Sunday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. The Rebels (4-3) run-ruled Belmont 9-1 in five innings in the first game before dropping the second game 11-6 to Murray State.

   

   

NO. 22 OLE MISS SPLITS SERIES WITH NO. 10 TCU AFTER 5-3 SUNDAY LOSS
       
FORT WORTH, Texas – Tanner Mathis went 3-for-4 with an RBI and the Rebels strung together a fifth-inning rally to tie the game, but couldn’t grab the lead as No. 22 Ole Miss (1-1) fell to No. 10 TCU (1-1) by a score of 5-3 on Sunday.

   

   

Women’s Hoops Drops Close Game With No. 10 Tennessee
       
OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss women’s basketball team hung tough with No. 10 Tennessee, falling to the Lady Vols at home 66-56 Sunday afternoon in front of 2,776 fans.

   

   

Freeze Completes First Full-Time Staff At Ole Miss
       
OXFORD, Miss. -- Ole Miss head football coach Hugh Freeze has completed his first full-time staff with the Rebels with the addition of Corey Batoon as Assistant Athletics Director for Player Development and Tyler Siskey as Coordinator of Recruiting Development.

Thursday’s game in Oxford features a pair of teams near the top of the SEC standings with third-place Florida visiting fourth-place Ole Miss. The 13th-ranked Gators will face a Rebel squad coming off two straight wins and three victories in its last four outings. Ole Miss has defended its home court with a perfect 8-0 mark this season, while Florida is 1-4 on the road.

Freeze Announces First Additions To Ole Miss Football Staff

AUBURN, Ala. -- Senior running back Brandon Bolden rushed for a season-high 114 yards on 13 carries and two touchdowns, but Ole Miss fell to No. 23 Auburn 41-23 here Saturday night at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

After falling behind 14-0 early, the Rebels responded rushing for a season-high 172 yards in the first half, led by Bolden, who recorded his first 100-yard rushing performance of the year and eighth of his career.

   

 

Ole Miss Soccer Beats Kentucky, 2-1 In OT
       
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Ole Miss soccer team won its second straight game Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 overtime win at Kentucky.
With the win, Ole Miss improved to 7-10-1 overall (3-7 SEC) while Kentucky fell to 12-6 overall (5-5 SEC).
Alix Hildal scored the game winner for the Rebels in the 92nd minute on an unassisted goal.

Rebels Drop Slugfest With No. 9 Arkansas

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - Junior Randall Mackey threw two touchdowns and rushed for another, but Ole Miss could not hold on to an early 17-0 lead as the Rebels fell to No. 9 Arkansas 29-24 on Saturday.
Tyler Wilson threw for 232 yards and rushed for two touchdowns. Dennis Johnson rushed for 160 yards on 15 carries, including a 52-yard touchdown. Joe Adams caught four passes for 124 yards.

  

 

Ole Miss Soccer Downs Vanderbilt, 3-0
       
OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss soccer team got back on track in SEC play with a 3-0 win over Vanderbilt Thursday night.
With the win, Ole Miss improved to 6-10-1 overall (2-7 SEC) while Vanderbilt fell to 8-9 overall (2-7 SEC). The three goals marked the fifth time this season Ole Miss has scored at least three goals in a match and it marks the ninth time the Rebels have recorded multiple goals in a game.

REBEL NETTERS READY FOR YEAR’S FIRST MAJOR
 
OXFORD, Miss. – Professional tennis has four major events during the year.  College tennis has three, and the first one - the ITA/D’Novo All-American Championships - begins this weekend in Tulsa, Okla.  Several members of the Ole Miss men’s tennis team are among the more than 300 players expected to compete for the first national title of the 2011-12 college tennis season.

The Rebels did not allow a goal during the first 455 minutes of the year which marks the longest the team held its opponents without a goal to start the season since the beginning of the 2003 season and it’s also the longest the team held an opponent scoreless in program history. During that span, opposing teams took 65 shots

OXFORD, Miss. (AP)— The Georgia Bulldogs held the Ole Miss Rebels to just 183 total yards and a single offensive touchdown in a 27-13 victory on Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

"I thought our defense came out in the second half and played a dominant game," Georgia coach Mark Richt said. "The defense finished this game extremely well. One play could have made it ugly and nasty for us, but our defense just didn't (allow) that."

“The Memphis game is a great opportunity for us,” head coach Matt Mott said.  “They are number 16 in the country and are 5-0 and they are playing really well.  Our girls are excited and we are excited to play them.  They are our biggest rival outside of the SEC and so I expect a really great game.  They are a very good team so we have to be sharp and focused and ready to go.”

Ole Miss Soccer Records Double Overtime Tie With Wright State

AUBURN, Ala. – The Ole Miss soccer team kept its opponent off the scoreboard for the fourth consecutive game as the Rebels recorded a 0-0 double overtime tie against Wright State Friday night at the Auburn Tournament.

With the tie, Ole Miss is now 3-0-1 on the year and remains unbeaten in its first four matches of the year.  This season’s start ties the program record for the best start to a year, through the first four games, with the 2005 team who went 4-0.

Game Week Practice Begins
 
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss began its game week preparations for Saturday’s season opener against BYU with a two-and-a-half hour practice on Tuesday.
After Monday’s routine day off, the Rebels were a little more rested as they began preparing for the Cougars in earnest.
“Game week is finally here,” head coach Houston Nutt said. “Our guys were real fresh today. I thought they moved around extremely well. They know it’s near. They had tremendous focus today. It was a good day.”

“This was a great early test for our team,” head coach Matt Mott said.  “We really hung in and we really worked hard in the second half.  It was a really great goal for Rafa and she’s able to create goals out of nothing.  To be able to come in and keep a clean sheet on the road against a team like Texas Tech is great.”

    

   

Ole Miss Runners Prep For 2011 Cross Country Season

   

OXFORD, Miss. – Following a 2010 season that saw Ole Miss Cross Country achieve some of the best results in school history, the Rebel men and women look to carry that momentum into a promising 2011 campaign.
Ole Miss’ collection of long-distance runners reported to campus on Aug. 16 and has looked good according to track and field associate head coach Doug Blackwell, who oversees the cross country teams.

    

     

Big Turnout For Meet The Rebels
       
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss continued its preparations for the Sept. 3 football season opener against BYU with an intrasquad scrimmage in front of nearly 6,000 fans at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Saturday evening.
 
An estimated 4,000 Ole Miss fans showed up at the Indoor Practice Field for the annual Meet the Rebels Day prior to the scrimmage.

WEATHER FORCES REBELS INSIDE FOR PRACTICE
   

“We're a little leg weary and we have a lot of guys fighting through some things, so we decided to make our early practice the full pad one today,” Nutt said. "I was glad to see Mike Marry (MLB) back out there today.  He looked good, very physical.
        “I can see a big jump in our understanding of the terminology and what we are trying to do, things that were vague to them in the spring.  We've been through the whole book, and it’s great to see things coming together.”

  

 

Quarterback Battle Heats Up
       
OXFORD, Miss. – The temperatures at Ole Miss football practices are cooling down, but the quarterback race got even warmer on Tuesday as the Rebels went through another day of preseason camp.
 
With the team in full pads again, head coach Houston Nutt pointed out the progress of Rebel signal callers Barry Brunetti, Randall Mackey and Zack Stoudt, who are in a tight three-way race for the starting job.

 

 

Rebels Regroup After Scrimmage

OXFORD, Miss. – Coming off the team’s first full-scale scrimmage, Ole Miss returned to preseason football practice Sunday evening to correct mistakes.

The Rebels spent part of the day reviewing film of Saturday’s scrimmage before taking to the practice fields for 90 minutes, working in shorts and shoulder pads on corrections, special teams and conditioning.

“After looking at the film, we still have a long ways to go,” said head coach Houston Nutt. “I was pleased with some things and not very pleased with some other things. But that’s why we have camp."

Freshmen Impress Nutt In Rebels’ First Fall Practice

OXFORD, Miss. – The long summer days of waiting for preseason camp to arrive are finally over, as Ole Miss conducted its first practice of the 2011 fall season on Saturday.
 
Fourth-year head coach Houston Nutt had a number of good things to say about his team’s first practice that was moved into the Indoor Practice Facility during warm-ups because of lightning.
 
“We had a really good first day,” Nutt said. “A lot of energy, passion and enthusiasm. The key is to keep it going each day and keep getting better. Thank goodness for this indoor facility. This really makes everything great when you have a place like this.”

           

Ole Miss Athletics Assists Smithville Community

 

SMITHVILLE, Miss. – After collecting household goods over the last two weekends, Ole Miss Athletics personnel hand-delivered a substantial load of items to the Smithville community as part of the Rebel Relief Project on Tuesday.
More than 25 Ole Miss representatives joined forces with the United Way of Monroe County and citizens of Smithville and the surrounding areas to unload the Rebels’ 18-wheel equipment truck and another University van that were loaded with donated items.

   

   

Ole Miss' Hawkins Member Of Rimington Trophy Fall Watch List

   

OXFORD, Miss. -- Ole Miss' A.J. Hawkins remains a candidate to be college football's top center, as the Rimington Trophy released its updated watch list for the 2011 award on Wednesday.
A junior from Lithonia, Ga., Hawkins started 11 games at center last year and helped Ole Miss lead the SEC in fewest sacks allowed and rank third in rushing offense. Behind Hawkins’ line, the Rebels notched eight individual 100-yard rushing performances by four different runners.

   

   

Ole Miss' Sowell Selected To Lombardi Award Watch List

   

HOUSTON, Texas – For the second time in a week, Ole Miss' Bradley Sowell has been singled out as a candidate for one of college football's top awards.

On Tuesday, the senior offensive tackle was named to the Official Watch List for the 2011 Rotary Lombardi Award. This is the 42nd year that the award has honored the nation’s college lineman of the year.

Crouse shuts down Volunteers
   
KNOXVILLE — Matt Crouse continued his Friday night dominance, throwing a five-hitter to help Ole Miss beat Tennessee 6-1 in the opening game of a Southeastern Conference baseball series.

It marked the second complete game in three weeks for Crouse, a junior left-hander who struck out six and walked two in improving his record to 6-0.

Mississippi not giving coach Kennedy contract extension after disappointing basketball season

OXFORD, Miss. — For just the second time in his five-year tenure, Mississippi basketball coach Andy Kennedy will not receive a contract extension.

Ole Miss athletic director Pete Boone confirmed Thursday Kennedy, who has three years remaining on a contract that pays $1.3 million annually, will not receive an extension. A four-year contract is the longest allowed by state law.

Rebels blank Samford 3-0 to wrap up home stand

   
Senior first baseman Matt Smith hit a two-run homer to center in the first and that was all the offense the Diamond Rebels (16-6) needed in a 3-0 victory over Samford (15-8) on Tuesday night.

“It was a well-played game. (We got) a big home run, obviously, by Matt (Smith) in the first,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said. “I thought (Matt) Tracy wasn’t as sharp as he was last week, but battled out of some jams against a very good Samford team. Offensively, they didn’t give us much – They pitched well and just ran arm after arm out there.”

In-state Battle Brewing?
     
Lawrence Brown, a 6' 5", 230-pound tight end out of New Hope, has already been offered by Ole Miss, but another in-state scholarship could be on the way.

"I think Mississippi State is going to offer me next," said Brown when asked who which school is closest to offering next. "They are showing me a lot of love right now. They are really trying to get me to come there so I think they will be next."
