Rebel Women Take First Place In Cross Country Season Opener
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Ole
Miss women’s cross country team opened its 2011 season with a victory,
capturing the team title at the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic held
Saturday night at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
Senior
Logan Waites took home the individual title handily, running the
3.1-mile course in 17:44, winning under the lights by 23 seconds over
second place.
The Ole Miss women scored 43 points,
winning the team crown convincingly in the season opener over 24 other
teams from across the South. Arkansas Little-Rock and Arkansas
State tied for second with 79 points.
Junior Katie
Breathitt finished fifth overall with a time of 18:27, and Kayleigh
Skinner (18:36) placed eighth. Rebel freshman Haley Cutright
(18:59) finished 13th, and junior Anne Threlkeld completed the scoring
in 17th with a time of 19:10.
The freshman duo of McKenna Coughlin (24th, 19:24) and Giana Leone (39th, 19:52) rounded out the top seven.
The
Ole Miss men finished 4th, scoring 110 points. Defending Sunbelt
Conference Champions Western Kentucky took home the team title with 47
points, Arkansas Little-Rock was second with 80 points, and Harding
finished third with 95 points.
Sophomore
Kipchirchir Kiptoo led the way for the Rebel men, finishing seventh.
Kiptoo completed the 4-mile course in a time of 20:25 and was followed
closely by Ole Miss senior Martin Kirui (20:39), who finished 13th.
The
sophomore tandem of Loren Newsom and Max Holman finished 32nd and 33rd
respectively, each running a time of 21:25. Junior Riley Young
was the fifth man for Ole Miss, finishing in 46th with a time of 21:41.
Unattached
runner Daniel Kirwa (19:29) took home the men’s title, while Western
Kentucky’s Deus Rwaheru (19:46) was the top collegiate finisher.
The Rebel cross country teams have a week off before traveling to Newark, Del., for the Delaware Invitational on Sept. 17.
