REBELS RETURN HOME TO FACE HURRICANES Ole
Miss returns home from its trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands to host the
Miami Hurricanes on Friday. Ole Miss is coming off an 80-69 win over
TCU in which it shot by far a season-best 60 percent from the field.
That game cinched a third-place finish at the Paradise Jam.
PARADISE JAM Ole
Miss claimed third place at the Paradise Jam by going 2-1 with wins
over Drake (63-59) in the first round and TCU (80-69) on the
final day and a loss to tournament champion No. 19 Marquette (96-66) in
the semifinals. Ole Miss competed in the U.S. Virgin Islands for the
first time in its history.
HENRY MAKES ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Senior
forward Terrance Henry was named to the Paradise Jam All-Tournament
Team after helping Ole Miss place third at the tournament with a 2-1
record. The 6-foot-9 wing from Monroe, La., averaged a team-best 12.7
points per game and 7. 3 rebounds per game while in St. Thomas. He
finished one shy of his career high with 19 points against Marquette.
SCOUTING THE HURRICANES Miami
is off to a 4-0 start in its first season under head coach Jim
Larranaga, who had a stellar 14-year tenure at George Mason. The
Hurricanes are outscoring opponents by a 12.3 margin (69.0-56.8) and
handle the ball well with only 9.8 turnovers per game. The
guard-oriented team is led by Malcolm Grant (16.8 ppg) and Durand Scott
(12.5 ppg) on the outside. Garrius Adams chips in 8.3 ppg, while
Florida transfer Kenny Kadji leads the team with 6.3 rpg.
OLE MISS-MIAMI SERIES This
will be the fourth meeting between the Rebels and Hurricanes, with
Miami leading the series 3-0. The Hurricanes won twice in Coral Gables
in 1949 and then upended the Rebels there last year by an 86-73 margin,
despite 23 points by Chris Warren and 19 by Zach Graham.
OLE MISS VERSUS ACC FOES Ole
Miss owns a 17-25 all-time record against current members of the
Atlantic Coast Conference. The Rebels have played nine of the 12 teams,
but not Boston College, Duke or Wake Forest. The most-played series is
with Georgia Tech (Rebels are 8-11), but all of those games were played
when Georgia Tech was a fellow member of the Southern Conference and
the SEC.
FAMILIAR FOE One member of the Rebel staff is quite
familiar with the Hurricanes. Assistant coach Sergio Rouco was the head
man at Florida International University in Miami from 2004-09, as well
as two stints as an assistant at FIU before that. He grew up in Miami
and began his coaching career in the high school ranks of that city.
DEFENDING HOME COURT Winning
at home has been a trademark of Andy Kennedy's squads since he took the
reins in 2006-07. Ole Miss is 74-15 (.831 win pct.) in games played at
Tad Smith Coliseum during Kennedy's tenure, including a 2-0 record this
season. Ole Miss has won 205 of its last 252 games (.813 win pct.) in
Oxford dating back to the 1995-96 campaign. The Rebels have an all-time
record of 438-194 (.693 win pct.) at Tad Smith Coliseum, which opened
in 1965-66.
NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS The Rebels boast a 69-18
record (.793 win pct.) against teams outside the SEC since Andy Kennedy
took over in 2006-07, including a 47-2 mark at home. The Rebels went
12-4 against non-league foes a year ago, including a 12-3 mark during
the regular season.
LOCK-DOWN DEFENSE Ole Miss ranks sixth
among SEC teams allowing 60.2 points per game to opponents and fourth
in field-goal percentage defense at 38.8. The Rebels held each of their
first two foes under 40 points (defeated Louisiana-Monroe 60-38 and
Grambling State 69-39), which marked the two lowest scores by a Rebel
opponent in the Andy Kennedy era. The Warhawks' 38 points are the
fewest by a Rebel opponent since giving up 38 to Arkansas-Pine Bluff on
Dec. 28, 2002.
SHOTS FALL AGAINST HORNED FROGS After
struggling with its shooting in the first four games of the season, the
Ole Miss offense exploded with 30 field goals out of 50 chances for 60
percent in the 80-69 win over TCU. Notable among those shots is that
the Rebels attempted just six 3-pointers, making two of them.
SUMMERS BREAKS INTO STARTING LINEUP Freshman
point guard Jarvis Summers made his first career start against TCU and
helped the Rebels to victory with 14 points on 4 of 5 from the field
and 5 of 6 from the charity stripe. He also leads the team in assists
with 2.8 per game, which ranks 12th in the SEC and second among league
freshmen.
NELSON CLUTCH IN COMEBACK WIN OVER DRAKE Ole Miss
trailed nearly the entire game, but sophomore guard Dundrecous Nelson
saved his best for last to propel the Rebels to an opening round
Paradise Jam victory. He scored 15 of his team-high 16 points in the
second half, including a huge 3-pointer with 2:06 left to put Ole Miss
ahead 61-56.
HOLLOWAY RETURNS WITH BIG NUMBERS Junior forward
Murphy Holloway has posted some big numbers in his first games back as
a Rebel. In the season opener, he pulled down a whopping 17 rebounds
against Louisiana-Monroe, the second-most boards by an SEC player so
far this year. Against Grambling, he posted his 15th career
double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds), which is second-most among
active SEC players. In the win over TCU, he poured in a season-high 20
points (9-13 FGs). In what is believed to be the first situation of its
kind, Holloway transferred away from Ole Miss, attended South Carolina
last year, and then returned to his original school this summer. After
Ole Miss submitted waiver appeals of the year-in residency requirement
for transfers, both the NCAA and SEC accepted Holloway's request to
compete in the 2011-12 season.
BUCKNER NEARS ALL-TIME SCHOOL BLOCKS RECORD Junior
forward Reginald Buckner needs just 15 blocks to set the all-time
school career record. In just 68 games, the Memphis native has
accumulated 166 blocks. The school record is held by Sean Murphy, who
had 180 blocks in 117 games from 1988-91. Last year, Buckner tied Ansu
Sesay's school record for blocks in a game with eight at Arkansas. He
also surpassed his own single-season record from his freshman year (64)
with 95 as a sophomore (ranks 16th in SEC history).
