Drops SEC Road Contest at Alabama
Despite Tia Faleru’s SEC leading ninth
double-double of the year, the Ole Miss women’s basketball team dropped
a 93-79 SEC road contest at Alabama on Sunday (Jan. 12) in Tuscaloosa.
Ole Miss (9-8, 0-3 SEC) played the home team evenly in the second half,
as both team scored 45 points and the Rebels rebounded from a 33.3
percent (11-of-33) shooting first half to a shoot 46.2 percent
(18-of-39) in the second frame, but the Rebels couldn’t dig themselves
out of the 14-point half time hole.
Faleru lead the way for the Rebels with 27 points and 10 rebounds for
her ninth double-double of the year. Gracie Frizzell was the other
Rebel in double figures with 14 points, 12 of those points coming from
long range. Tianah Alvarado also provided a boost off the bench with
six points and four rebounds in 14 minutes of action.
Ole Miss started the second half strong and though the 12-minute media
timeout had outscored the Crimson Tide, 14-13. Alabama native, Monique
Jackson provided a huge boost for the Rebels in the second half with
five points and five rebounds in the second stanza.
Ole Miss was able to get as close as 12 points in the second half but
couldn’t find a way to get stops, dropping their third straight game.
Alabama’s Shafontaye Myers led all-scorers with 28 points in the
contest.
With a jumper from Faleru at the 10:37 mark of the first half, the
Rebels cut the lead to just one possession, 22-19, but the Crimson Tide
responded with a 7-0 spurt to take a 10-point lead with they extended
to 15 points before the half was over.
Senior Diara Moore completed an old fashioned three-point play at the
9:25 mark to make it just a 29-21 lead, but Alabama (8-8, 1-2 SEC)
responded with a bucket of their own stopping any momentum shift. The
Rebels got as close as four-points, but couldn’t stop Alabama’s
Shafontaye Myer, who had 21 points in the first half, and with teammate
Daisha Simmons combined for 34 of The Crimson Tide’s 48 first-half
points.
Ole Miss shot just 33.3 (11-of-33) in the first half, compared to 46.2
(18-of-39) for the Tide. The home team won the battle of the
boards as well, holding a 24-29 advantage.
Rebel Sidelines
Valencia McFarland extends her scoring streak to 104 consecutive games
and her consecutive games started streak to 94 games … Ole Miss has now
dropped its last eight SEC games … Today’s game was a
homecoming for Ole Miss players Tia Faleru and Monique Jackson who are
Alabama natives. Additionally, Rebel Director of Ops Eric White and
Athletic Trainer Meredith Pendergast also hail from “Sweet Home
Alabama” … Tia Faleru picked up her ninth double-double and her fourth
game of 20+ points.
