Rebels Shine At SEC Indoor; Thiemann’s Take Doubles Title
LEXINGTON,
Ky. – The Ole Miss men’s tennis team capped off a great tournament at
the SEC Indoor Championships with the senior twin duo of Marcel
Thiemann and Chris Thiemann taking the Doubles Championship here Monday
morning at the Boone Tennis Complex.
This
marks the 11th SEC Indoor title for the Rebels and sixth since they
adopted the current individual format. It’s also Ole Miss’
fourth overall doubles title and third under the current format.
The Rebels put the SEC on notice, showing that they have the talent to be competitive with the top teams in the country.
Three
players advanced to the singles quarterfinals and two reached the
semifinals. Highlights include freshman William Kallberg
knocking off the top seed and the nation’s No. 3 ranked player in the
third round, freshman Nik Scholtz taking out a top 20 player and
reaching the semifinals, and junior Jonas Lutjen defeating Kentucky’s
Eric Quigley, who is ranked No. 5 in the country, to get to the
semifinals.
In the doubles final, the Thiemann’s downed the Georgia team of Wil Spencer and Garrett Brasseaux 8-3.
The
twins got off to a solid start with an early break to take a 3-0
lead. Georgia gained a break and pulled to within 5-3, but
that was as close as it got. Marcel held his serve and then
the T-brothers broke again easily to go up 7-3. Chris served it
out to clinch the duo’s second tournament title together. They
won the ITA Southern Regional Doubles in the fall of 2010.
“It was a great team showing this weekend, and I am especially proud of
the twins claiming an SEC doubles title,” Chadwick said.
The
Rebels return home to get ready for their first dual match of the 2012
season Jan. 26 against Southern Miss. The match will begin at
1:30 p.m. at the Gillom Sports Center, and admission is free.
This will be the only chance to see the team in action at home until
Feb. 28.
