ALLEN’S GIVES NO. 24 REBELS 4-3 WALK-OFF WIN
Will Allen came up with
a bases-loaded single with two outs in the ninth to push Ole Miss (8-1)
to a 4-3 walk-off win over ULM (4-5) Wednesday night at Swayze Field.
With
the bases loaded following a lead-off single from Brantley Bell and
intentional walks of Auston Bousfield and Austin Anderson, Allen came
to the plate to face reliever Tyler Bray who had just been brought into
the game. Allen took the first pitch and sent it through the left side
to score Bell and give the Rebels a come-from-behind win in the ninth.
Cheyne
Bickel (1-1) picked up the win in relief, working the final 2.1 innings
and holding the Warhawks off the board while striking out one batter
and not allowing a walk. Starter Jeremy Massie worked 5.0 no-hit,
scoreless innings in his first start as a Rebel.
Carey Taylor
(0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits with three walks
and two strikeouts in 4.1 innings of relief. He put the winning run on
base in the ninth after giving up the tying run in the eighth.
“It
was a tough day to play baseball,” said Ole Miss head coach Mike
Bianco. “I’m proud of the way we played. Jeremy Massie was outstanding.
All the pitchers were outstanding, except for (Evan) Anderson’s tough
inning. Laxer came in and made it look easy with the 1-2-3 inning.
(Cheyne) Bickel was terrific after giving up the homer this weekend. He
came back and looked tremendous.”
Ole Miss got off to a quick
start, scoring in the first when Braxton Lee scored from second on a
ground ball to short from Bousfield. Lee reached on a walk, stole
second and took third on a throwing error to second on the steal to set
up the score.
The Rebels got a second run in the fourth when Lee
delivered an RBI double to bring Colby Bortles home from first. Bortles
singled to open the inning and took second on a passed ball before
scoring on the Lee hit to give Ole Miss the 2-0 lead.
ULM answered in the seventh, taking advantage of several Rebel miscues to push three runs across the plate.
The
Warhawks got things started with a single and a walk. Justin Stawychny
then lay down a sac bunt down the third base line, but a throwing error
allowed him to reach safely and a run to score. The play pushed two men
into scoring position following the run.
A wild pitch brought a
second run home and advanced Stawychny to third before a Vincent
Dellecono double scored Stawychny and gave the Warhawks the 3-2 lead
after the top of the seventh.
Ole Miss answered in the eighth,
tying the game on a Bortles groundout that brought pinch runner Cameron
Dishon home from third. Dishon entered the game to run following a
one-out single from Sikes Orvis. Preston Overbey then doubled to push
Dishon to third and set up the score on the Bortles ground ball.
The Rebels then completed the rally in the ninth with the bases-loaded hit from Allen.
Ole
Miss will continue home play this weekend with a three-game series
against UCF at Swayze Field. First pitch for Friday’s series opener is
set for 6:30 p.m.
