Second Half Run Pushes No. 21 Vanderbilt Past Ole Miss

        

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Ole Miss women’s basketball, trailing by one with 15 minutes to play, saw No. 21/24 Vanderbilt use a run to put the game out of reach as the Commodores posted a 68-52 win in Nashville Sunday afternoon.

   

With the loss, Ole Miss fell to 10-6 overall (0-3 SEC) while No. 21/24 Vanderbilt improved to 13-2 overall (1-1 SEC).

   

Nikki Byrd, who picked up her fourth foul with 12:56 left to play in the second half, recorded her 11th double-double of the year and 16th of her career with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

   

Ole Miss shot 28.4 percent from the floor for the game (21-74) while Vanderbilt shot 49.1 percent (27-55),
After a 4-4 tie, Vanderbilt went on a 13-2 run to take a 17-8 advantage over the Rebels with 9:28 remaining in the first half.

   

Ole Miss used an 11-0 run capped by a jumper from Courtney Marbra to take a 19-17 lead with 3:40 left in the half.  During their run, the Rebels kept the Commodores scoreless for just under seven minutes.

   

Vanderbilt led Ole Miss, 25-21 at the half.  Amber Singletary, Kenyotta Jenkins and Marbra led Ole Miss with four points each at the half while Byrd and Valencia McFarland led the Rebels with four rebounds each.

   

Ole Miss shot just 22.2 percent from the floor (8-36) while Vanderbilt shot 37.0 percent (10-27).  The Commodores entered the game first in the nation in three-point shooting (43 percent) but the Rebels held the Commodores to just 1-4 shooting from three point range.

   

In the second half, Ole Miss cut Vanderbilt’s lead to one, 32-31, on a basket from Byrd with 15:52 remaining but the Commodores responded with a 13-2 run to extend its lead to 45-33 with just over 11 minutes to play.

   

Byrd cut Vanderbilt’s lead to single-digits, 48-40 with 8:05 to play but the Commodores increased their lead to double-digits and posted the 68-52 win.
