Haley Sanders Grabs Top 20 Finish At Cougar Classic

OXFORD, Miss. -- Junior Haley Sanders shot an even-72 in the final round Tuesday, to earn her second career top-20 finish, as the Rebels finished in 11th place at the Cougar Classic (presented by Piggly Wiggly) in Charleston, S.C.

No. 4 LSU took home the team title and individual title, as defending national champion Austin Ernst finished at 13-under to lead the Tigers.  LSU overtook No. 9 North Carolina, who held the lead at the conclusion of Monday’s action, with an 11-under final round to end the tournament at 16-under.

Facing a 22-team field that featured nine teams ranked in the top 25, the Rebels finished with an 876 for the tournament.

Sanders birdied four holes on the back-nine Tuesday, finishing at 1-under par overall to lead the Rebels—good for 17th place in the individual standings.  The Rogers, Ark. native missed a top-10 finish by just two strokes.

Defending Cougar Classic champion Natalie Gleadall concluded her tournament at 3-over, after rolling in five birdies en route to a 73 in the final round.  Junior newcomer Ericka Schneider matched Gleadall with a 219.

Haley Millsap turned in a solid performance on the final day, shooting a 73 to complete her three rounds at 225.

True freshman Taelor Rubin posted a 227 in her first career collegiate tournament.

“It’s going to be a fun year, watching the team compete,” head coach Michele Drinkard said.  “They have experience and want to win.  Today’s round was a perfect example.  We were +9 after three holes of play, and then we played the last four 10-under par.  At anytime this team can turn it on and go low.  It’s going to be a lot of fun!”

The Rebels return to action Sept. 19-21, as they travel to Vail, Colo. for the Golfweek Conference Challenge.
