YARBROUGH NAMED ALL-AMERICAN BY BASEBALL AMERICA, PERFECT GAME
OXFORD, Miss. – The
postseason honors have continued to pour in for Rebel second baseman
Alex Yarbrough as the junior was most recently named a first team
All-America selection by both Baseball America and Perfect Game.
The
pair of organizations are the most recent to name Yarbrough as a first
team selection to their annual All-America squads, joining Collegiate
Baseball, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and the
American Baseball Coaches Association in tabbing the Texas native as an
All-American.
Yarbrough helped lead the Rebels to the NCAA
Tournament this season as Ole Miss advanced to the College Station
regional hosted by Texas A&M University. There the Rebels advanced
to the championship game of the regional before ending the season,
marking the sixth time in the last eight seasons Ole Miss has advanced
to the championship game of an NCAA Regional. Four of those times, the
Rebels have advanced to an NCAA Super Regional.
It also marked the ninth time in the last 10 seasons that Ole Miss has advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
Yarbrough
batted at a .380 clip, leading the Rebels at the plate in the 2012
season and finishing second in the Southeastern Conference in batting.
He ranked in the top 10 of six offensive categories at the end of the
regular season and was named an All-SEC first team selection by the
league’s coaches.
The second baseman belted out 17 doubles,
three triples and three home runs while posting 43 RBI and scoring 43
runs on the year. His slugging percentage of .508 was third on the team
and his on base percentage of .437 was second on the year.
Yarbrough
also turned in a stellar season in the field defensively, committing
only three errors through 62 games as he posted a .989 fielding
percentage. He was also named as an SEC All-Defensive team selection by
the league’s coaches for his play in the field. After committing his
first error in the second game of the season, Yarbrough went 456.0
consecutive innings without an error before committing his second of
the season.
Drafted in the fourth round of the 2012 MLB Draft by
the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Yarbrough signed with the Angeles
recently and has begun his professional baseball career.
