Ole Miss Soccer Records Double Overtime Tie With Wright State
Double Overtime Tie
AUBURN, Ala. – The Ole
Miss soccer team kept its opponent off the scoreboard for the fourth
consecutive game as the Rebels recorded a 0-0 double overtime tie
against Wright State Friday night at the Auburn Tournament.
With
the tie, Ole Miss is now 3-0-1 on the year and remains unbeaten in its
first four matches of the year. This season’s start ties the
program record for the best start to a year, through the first four
games, with the 2005 team who went 4-0.
“It was a tough match
for us in terms of heat, especially with the 4:30 p.m. start,” head
coach Matt Mott said. The temperature at kickoff was 91 degrees.
“We created a number of chances tonight we were just missing the final
pass and we weren’t clean with our finishes.”
Ole Miss had its
chances on the night with four players each recording four shots.
Rafaelle Souza recorded four shots with two on goal, Emily Reid took
four with one on goal and Alix Hildal recorded four.
Goalkeeper
Alley Ronaldi recorded her second shutout of the year and extended Ole
Miss’ scoreless streak to 380 minutes. The 380 minutes the Rebels
have kept their opponents off the scoreboard is the longest scoreless
streak in program history to start the year. It’s also the longest
scoreless streak at any point in the season since 2009 when the team
held its opponents scoreless for 450 consecutive minutes.
“We
were good defensively tonight. It was a battle,” Mott said.
“I told the team all week that Wright State was a good team and it
showed.”
Ronaldi, who made seven saves in goal for the
Rebels, had a big save in the second half to keep the Raiders off the
scoreboard.
“Alley had an excellent game” Mott
said. “She had that huge save in the second half and she was the
highlight of our defense.”
Ole Miss will play No. 9/6 Duke
Sunday morning at 11:30 a.m. in the Auburn Tournament. Duke and
tournament host Auburn will play late Friday night.
