Rebels Beat Jackson State Twice

OXFORD, Miss. -- The No. 37 ranked Ole Miss women’s team got a confidence boosting doubleheader victory against Jackson State here Wednesday at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.  With consecutive scores of 4-0, the Rebels move to 7-9 overall.

“We did what we needed to do,” head coach Mark Beyers said.  “We picked up two wins.  I was proud of the girls, because they took care of business and didn’t mess around and actually played pretty well in some spots.  It was clear we were the better team, but at the same time I felt like we did a good job of not only winning, but getting better today.”

The Rebels rushed out of the gates in the first match, taking the doubles point.  Caroline Rohde-Moe and Santa Shumilina defeated Jackson State’s Rebekah Adewumi and Laura Rojas 8-2 at No. 2 doubles while Vief Vlaar and Allie Robbins took an 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles to clinch a 1-0 Ole Miss lead.

Rohde-Moe, Mai El Kamash and Vlaar wrapped up the first match for Ole Miss at one, two and three.  Shumilina, Iris Verboven and Robbins all won first sets before their matches were suspended.

The Rebels continued their success in the second match.   El Kamash and Verboven completed an 8-1 victory at No. 3 and Vlaar and Robbins also took an 8-1 win at No. 2 to secure the doubles point.

Verboven, Rohde-Moe and Shumilina finished off the match for Ole Miss with wins at five, one and four.

Ole Miss will return to action on Friday, hosting arch-rival Mississippi State at the tennis center at 1 p.m.  Each Ole Miss fan will receive an Easter egg with a prize inside.  The Rebels will also host a doubleheader on Sunday against Southern Miss beginning at 9 a.m.
