Rebels Drop Rubber Match Against No. 15 Texas A&M
OXFORD, Miss. –
Sophomore third baseman Allison Brown hit her team-high 16th double of
the season, setting a new single season program record, but Ole Miss
fell 5-1 to No. 15 Texas A&M on Sunday afternoon at the Ole Miss
Softball Complex.
It was Senior Day for the
Rebels, as Ole Miss recognized its three seniors, Brittany Broome,
Erinn Jayjohn and Kelly Nolan, prior to Sunday’s series finale.
“It’s
a challenge to play,” said Ole Miss assistant coach Mike Perniciaro
about playing on Senior Day. “It’s an emotional game for all the
seniors and for everybody else as well. It’s tough to get up sometimes.
Our seniors have shown some great leadership and we appreciate all the
work they’ve put in over the last four years.”
Brown’s
double in the bottom of the first highlighted her day at the plate. The
Los Alamitos, Calif., native hit .545 (6-11) for the series with one
double, one home run, three RBI and a slugging percentage of .909.
After
a one-two-three inning in the top of the first, Texas A&M scored
two runs one inning later off a two-run double that hit off the top of
the left field wall.
Ole Miss (23-31, 3-21
Southeastern Conference) cut its deficit in half with an RBI ground out
by junior first baseman Londen Ladner that scored junior center fielder
RT Cantillo from third.
Texas A&M (37-13, 8-12
SEC) produced one run each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to
win the series’ rubber match 5-1.
The Rebels will
close out their season Wednesday in a doubleheader vs. Alcorn State.
Game one will begin at 4 p.m. CT, and the season finale will start at 6
p.m. CT.
“We still have a challenge in front of
us,” Perniciaro said. “We still have two games left to play and we’re
going to come out hard and battle. I’m looking forward to that.”
