Missouri Wins 19th Straight, Ties School Record
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The
25th-ranked Mizzou volleyball team matched history on Tuesday night
(Oct. 8) as it knocked off Austin Peay, 3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-12), to
move to 19-0 on the season, matching the program record for consecutive
wins to open a season. The 19-0 record ties the mark set by the 1982
team and the 2013 Tigers will look to grab sole possession of that on
Friday at Tennessee. Mizzou was anchored by a balanced attack on
Tuesday, highlighted by a career-best eight kills from freshman Julia
Towler (Blue Springs, Mo.) and eight more from freshman outside Carly
Kan (Honolulu, Hawaii).
“Obviously it is great to match the
record, but it isn’t something that we talk about a lot,” head coach
Wayne Kreklow said after the match. “I think this team has its goals
set much higher than just 19 wins and they are a hungry group and they
still believe that there is a lot left to accomplish. Tonight, it was
great to get some people into the game that bust their tails every day
in practice and don’t see a lot of court time. I’m really happy with
how we played tonight.”
Mizzou’s 19th win on Tuesday matches its
win total from a season ago and it came behind a very balanced
offensive attack that hit .390 as a team with eight different players
tallying kills. Towler had a huge night with her career-best eight
kills, doing so on .545 hitting while Kan also had eight kills, doing
so on 12 errorless attacks (.667 hitting). Towler also finished with
six blocks in the win as she tallied 11.5 total points. Kan led the way
with 12.0 points with two blocks, three aces and seven digs to go along
with her eight kills.
Sophomore Regan Peltier (Nixa, Mo.) also
had a nice night with seven kills on .467 hitting and four blocks while
senior All-American Lisa Henning (Blue Springs, Mo.) added six kills.
Whitney Little (Keller, Texas) added five kills on .500 hitting and
freshman Emily Thater (Springfield, Mo.) added three. Senior setter
Molly Kreklow (Delano, Minn.) added 32 assists and 11 digs for her
seventh double-double of the season. Junior libero Sarah Meister (San
Diego, Calif.) collected a match-high 13 digs. Mizzou aced Austin Peay
11 times in the win, matching its season-high.
