► Mizzou Football
returns to Faurot Field/Memorial Stadium with a 3-0 record and an
offense that is ranked seventh in the nation in total yardage with a
567.0 average. The Tigers host non-conference foe Arkansas State on
Saturday, Sept. 28, with kickoff set for 6:30 p.m. on CSS... ►
With the 45-28 win at Indiana on Sept. 21, head coach Gary Pinkel
matched former Mizzou coach Dan Devine for No. 2 in school history with
his 93rd win. Pinkel has coached the Tigers to a 93-61 record during
his 13-year tenure in Columbia. He now needs eight wins to match
Mizzou’s all-time winningest coach, Don Faurot, who won 101 games from
1935-42, 46-56... ►
Visiting squad Arkansas State recently took a setback at Memphis,
losing by a score of 31-7 on Sept. 21. The Red Wolves enter the contest
with Mizzou sporting a 2-2 record... FRANKLIN GOES BIG IN BLOOMINGTON ►
Senior QB James Franklin amassed a careerbest 404 yards of total
offense as he led the Tigers to the convincing 45-28 road win at
Indiana. He finished the night 32-of-47 passing for a career-high 343
yards, two touchdowns (7 yards, 14 yards) and two interceptions, while
also rushing for 61 yards and one touchdown (1 yard) on 13 carries (4.7
avg.)… ► The rushing TD was the fi rst for Franklin since he won Offensive MVP honors of the 2011 Independence Bowl against North Carolina... ► Franklin helped Mizzou roll to 623 yards of offense against the Hoosiers, and that marked a record for most yardage ever by an opponent at IU’s Memorial Stadium…
INTERCEPTIONS? MIZZOU HAS THOSE ► Missouri recorded three
interceptions for the third consecutive game this season and now has
nine INTs on the year. The Tigers had just seven interceptions all of
last season, and the nine pickoffs ranks first in the SEC and fi rst
nationally with its 3.0 average per game. The nine INTs are second-most
in the NCAA, behind only Northwestern (10, in four games)… ►
Eight different Tigers have combined for the nine total interceptions,
with senior CB E.J. Gaines the only one with two pickoffs. Gaines is
Mizzou’s active career interceptions leader with five, but
interestingly enough, the INTs for all of the other seven in 2013 have
marked the first of their career... MIZZOU’S DEFENSE LOOKS TO CONTINUE STREAK OF THIEVERY ► The INTs at Indiana pushed Missouri’s consecutive games streak with a turnover forced to 33, the longest active streak in the country. The last time Mizzou had notched
three INTs in three consecutive games was back in 1980, when the Tigers
had fi ve against San Diego State, three against Penn State and three
against Oklahoma State in games 3-4-5 of that season… ► Conversely, the Tiger defense made its living in 2012 by jarring the ball loose from opposing ball carriers, as MU recovered 16 fumbles in 12 games, which ranked them fi fth in the nation for most recoveries… TURNING IT AROUND ON THIRD DOWN ► Mizzou has been outstanding on third down so far this season. The Tigers are 28-of-47 (.596) on third down this year, including a solid 8-of-16 at Indiana.... ► That’s been a drastic shift from the 2012 season, when Mizzou fi nished the season ranked 109th nationally, with a season conversion rate of just 33.3 percent... ► Through three games in 2013, Mizzou has converted 28 third-downs, after netting only 62 in 12 games in 2012…
