MIZZOU FOOTBALL

Team Notes

·         Mizzou achieved bowl eligibility for the 7th-straight season (extending a school-record streak) with a thrilling come-from-behind 31-27 win Saturday in Columbia over Texas Tech.  The Tigers trailed 14-0 after the first quarter, and faced a 27-17 deficit to begin the 4th quarter.  QB James Franklin threw for a TD pass early in the 4th to make it a one-score game, and he scored on a 9-yard keeper with 2:22 left for the game-winner…

·         The Tiger defense did their part too, as it clinched the victory with a dramatic goal-line stand in the closing seconds, capped by DE Michael Sam’s interception at the MU 4-yardline on a pass that was deflected at the line of scrimmage by DT Dominique Hamilton.  That play came with just :32 seconds left in the game, and the Tigers ran out the clock for the win, which improved them to 6-5 overall and 4-4 in Big 12 play…

·         The comeback marked the 2nd double-digit 4th-quarter deficit overcome to win in less than a month.  On Oct. 29th, Mizzou trailed at Texas A&M by 11 points in the 4th quarter before coming back to force overtime, eventually claiming a 38-31 OT win.  The A&M comeback stands as the 2nd-largest 4th-quarter deficit ever overcome to win for Mizzou (13 points is the biggest 4th-quarter deficit overcome, against Nebraska in 1949), while the 10-point deficit is the 3rd-largest overcome…

·         Despite playing its first game without Big 12 leading rusher Henry Josey (116 ypg), the Tigers ran for 318 yards against Tech, the most for Mizzou this season against an FBS opponent (season high was 428 vs. FCS’ Western Illinois).  The Tigers retained their hold on the Big 12 rushing lead, as they lead the league, and now rank 11th nationally in rushing, with an average of 242.18 yards per game…

·         Mizzou is one of only three schools in the nation to average 240 yards per game both rushing and passing (along with Nevada and Northern Illinois).  Mizzou ranks 11th in rushing (242.18 avg.) and is 50th in passing (241.27 avg.)…

·         Mizzou’s offense has displayed an uncanny balance to it, as through 11 games, there’s only a difference of 10 yards between its season rushing yardage total (2,664 yards) and passing yardage total (2,654 yards)…

·         The win over Tech gave Mizzou victories in consecutive weeks for the first time this season, as it followed a 17-5 win the previous week in Columbia over #21 Texas.  They’ll look to make it three in a row this Saturday when they take on arch rival Kansas at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.  The nation’s 2nd-oldest rivalry will see the 120th game between the two schools.  Mizzou holds a 56-54-9 edge in the previous 119 matchups (Kansas claims a 55-55-9 tie, due to a forfeited game in 1960 that both schools claim as a win)…
