Georgia Cruises by Georgia Tech 42-10
ATHENS, Ga. - The No. 3
University of Georgia football team handled in-state rival Georgia Tech
a 42-10 loss in front of 92,746 fans and a nationally-televised ESPN
audience in the final regular-season game of the season. With the win,
the Bulldogs move to 11-1 on the season, while Georgia Tech will fall
to 6-6. Georgia improves to 62-37-5 in the all time series and is 10-1
in the last 11 seasons. Georgia also set a new school record in point
scored in a season with 456, besting the previous record of 450, set in
2002 over a 14-game season.
Aaron Murray the Bulldogs threw the air, going 14-for-17 for 215 yards.
Malcolm Mitchell was his top target, finishing with 88 yards on three
catches. Rhett McGowan and Jay Rome were also on the receiving end of a
Murray touchdown pass. Todd Gurley led the ground attack, rushing for
97 yards and two touchdowns 12 carries. Keith Marshall picked up 66
yards and two touchdowns on seven carries.
Defensively, it was Alec Ogletree who led the way, finishing with a
career-best 15 tackles, including one tackle for a loss. Christian
Robinson finished with 13 tackles, including two for a loss, while John
Jenkins totaled 11 tackles. Bacarri Rambo, playing in his final home
game, forced two fumbles, recovering one and grabbed an interception
that set up a score, while recording eight tackles.
Mitchell took the opening kickoff 47 yards to set the Bulldogs up with
1st-and-10 at the Georgia Tech 44 yard line. After pickups of 11, 15
and 15 yards, Gurley capped off a 29-yard opening drive performance
with a three-yard touchdown run that put Georgia up 7-0, following the
Marshall Morgan extra point.
The Yellow Jackets moved all the way down to the Georgia one-yard line
before Rambo forced his second fumble of the game and returned it 49
yards to the 50-yard line. Eight plays and less that three minutes
later, Gurley found the end zone for his second rushing touchdown of
the game and put Georgia up 14-0, after the Morgan PAT. The Yellow
Jackets answered on the following drive, driving down to the Georgia 21
before being stopped on third down and being forced to settle for a
38-yard field goal that made it a 14-3 game.
Murray completed a 57-yard pass down the sideline to Mitchell to set
the Bulldogs up with 1st-and-10 at the GT 28. Marshall raced 15 yards
into the end zone two plays later to put Georgia up 21-3, after the
PAT, after a three play, 85-yard drive that took just 29 seconds off
the clock.
After Rambo recorded his 16th career interception, and his third
turnover of the game, Gurley and Marshall combined for 62 yards on the
ground on Georgia's next scoring drive before Murray found McGowan in
the back corner of the end zone for a touchdown that helped Georgia to
a 28-3 lead.
After forcing a three-and-out to start the second half, Georgia got the
ball back and went 59 yards on seven plays that took 2:08 off the clock
and gave the Bulldogs a 35-3 lead. The drive culminated in a 24-yard
touchdown pass from Murray to Jay Rome, the first of his career. The
Bulldogs tacked on another touchdown with a 17-yard run by Marshall
with six minutes left in the third quarter that made it a 42-3 game.
The Yellow Jackets added a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter on a six-play, 71-yard drive that made it a 42-10 game.
Georgia is set to make its fifth appearance in the SEC Championship
game in Atlanta, Ga., next weekend. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. and the
game will be televised on CBS. If No. 2 Alabama beats Auburn, the
Crimson Tide will be Georgia's opponent from the West. Georgia will be
the home team for the game. Georgia's last SEC Championship win was in
2005 when it defeated LSU for the title.
