No. 7 Bulldogs Take Two at Bulldog Invitational

ATHENS, Ga. — After the storms rolled out of Athens, the No. 7 University of Georgia softball team (17-2) took to the field and notched two wins on Saturday, as the Bulldogs defeated Ohio (7-9) 7-3 and Minnesota (13-4) 5-9 at the Bulldog Invitational.

Game 1 – Georgia 7, Ohio 3

The Bulldogs scored seven runs on four hits and 11 walks en route to a 7-3 win over Ohio on the second day of the Bulldog Invitational.

Erin Arevalo moved to 6-1 on the season, giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits and a pair of walks. Arevalo struck out 10 batters on the day. Ohio’s Lauren McClary dropped to 3-5 on the year, allowing seven runs on four hits and 11 walks.

Ashley Pauly led the way in game one, going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Kristyn Sandberg brought her home run total to seven with a two-run shot in the fifth.

Ohio used a pair of singles and a defensive miscue to jump out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

The Bulldogs answered in the bottom of the second, as Gracie Goulder and Anna Swafford were each hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that scored Tiesha Reed and Brittney Hubbard and put Georgia on top 2-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Swafford and Hubbard worked a pair of walks and moved into scoring position on an infield fly off the bat of Niaja Griffin. With two outs, Pauly took the first pitch she saw up the middle for a two-run base hit that extended Georgia’s lead to 4-1.

Paige Wilson led off the Georgia fifth with a walk and made her way around the bases when Sandberg belted a 2-2 pitch over the right centerfield wall that gave Georgia a 6-1 lead. With the bases loaded, Swafford was hit by a pitch, allowing Ashley Razey to score from third and make a 7-1 game.

Ohio added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, but the comeback was thwarted as Georgia recorded the final outs to seal the 7-3 win.

Game 2 – Georgia 5, Minnesota 2

Using six hits and two Minnesota errors, Georgia closed out Saturday with a 5-2 win over the Golden Gophers.

Morgan Montemayor (7-1) tabbed the win after retiring a career-high 12 batters and allowing four hits. Minnesota’s Sara Moulton (10-3) took the loss after striking out 10 and walking two.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Sito got things started with a single to left center and moved to third on a stolen base and a single by Pauly. Sito crossed the plate when Razey hit into a fielder’s choice that made it a 1-0 game. With runners at first and second, Wilson roped a two-run single up the middle that put Georgia on top 3-0.

Georgia scored a run in both the third and fourth innings to take a 5-0 lead. Razey collected her fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the third, before Pauly hit a RBI-single that scored Sito for the second time.

Minnesota got on the board in the top of the fifth on a Kari Dorle two-run double to right center that made it a 5-2 game. The runs would end the teams’ offensive effort, and Georgia would head to day three with a 4-0 record in the tournament.
