No. 12 Georgia Knocks Off No. 3 Florida
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --
The 12th-ranked University of Georgia football team took down the No. 3
Florida Gators 17-9 in Southeastern Conference action on Saturday
afternoon in front of sellout crowd and a nationally televised CBS
audience at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Fla. With the win, Georgia
keeps its SEC Title hopes alive, improving to 7-1 on the season and 5-1
in league play. Florida drops to 7-1 on the year and 6-1 in the SEC.
Aaron Murray finished with 150 yards on 12-of-24 passing. Malcolm
Mitchell was Murray's top target, finishing with 74 yards and a
touchdown on five catches. Todd Gurley finished with 118 yards on the
ground on 26 attempts.
The story of the game was Georgia's defense, which forced six turnovers
and was led by Jarvis Jones who finished with 13 tackles, five tackles
for a loss, three sacks and two forced fumbles. Shawn Williams, Mike
Gilliard, Alec Ogletree and Amarlo Herrera each finished with six
tackles.
Damian Swann forced a fumble that was recovered by Jarvis Jones on the
third offensive play of the game by the Gators, giving the Bulldogs
1st-and-10 at the Florida 20. Four plays later, Gurley rushed for 10
yards and a touchdown to put Georgia up 7-0, following the extra point
by Marshall Morgan.
The Gators responded with a 70-yard drive but the Georgia defense held
Florida to a field goal, making it a 7-3 game. An interception at the
42-yard line and returned to the 11-yard line by the Gators set them up
with 1st-and-10 at the Georgia 11. Once again, the Bulldog defense held
strong, forcing another field goal to keep a 7-6 lead.
With less that a minute to play in the half and the Gators on the
Georgia five-yard line, Bacarri Rambo intercepted a pass in the end
zone to prevent the Gators from scoring and send the Bulldogs into the
locker room holding a 7-6 lead. The interception Rambo moved him into a
tie for second all-time at UGA with 14.
With less than 10 minutes to go in the game, Swann picked off Jeff
Driskel and returned it 15 yards to the UF 25. Georgia extended its
lead to 10-6 with a 29-yard field goal by Morgan. The interception by
Swann was the second forced turnover of the day for the sophomore. He
also stripped Driskel of the ball on the opening drive, setting up
Georgia's first touchdown of the game.
The Gators cut the lead to one at 10-9 with a 50-yard field goal with
9:41 left to play. The Bulldogs responded with a seven play, 75-yard
drive that put Georgia up 17-9. After a 10-yard completion to Gurley,
18-yard pass to Marlon Brown and a 12-yard completion to Mitchell,
Murray found Mitchell streaking down the sideline for a 45-yard
touchdown pass.
On the following drive, Georgia forced its sixth turnover and second in
the end zone. Driskel marched the Gators 74 yards before Jones forced a
fumble that was recovered by Sanders Commings in the end zone for a
touchback that sealed the win.
