Georgia Sweeps Kentucky In Swimming & Diving Opener
ATHENS,
Ga. --- The Georgia swimming and diving teams swept Kentucky in the
first meet of the 2013-14 season on Wednesday at Gabrielsen Natatorium.
The
Bulldogs (1-0, 1-0 SEC) posted a 162-110 win over the Wildcats, winning
every swimming event. The Lady Bulldogs (1-0, 1-0 SEC) swam to a 165-98
victory, extending their all-sports school record to 83 consecutive
wins at home.
Wednesday's meet was unusual in that a double-distance format was used for multiple events.
"Every
win is a good win, and we got a little extra out of this meet," Georgia
coach Jack Bauerle said. "We've been training really hard and shaking
things up was just what the kids needed at this stage. They had to push
themselves today, and they did a really good job at it. We've got
plenty to build on now as we keep moving forward."
Matias
Koski and Chase Kalisz were triple winners for the Bulldogs. Koski's
2:34.57 claimed the first-place spot in the 300 freestyle. He also put
up a time of 44.76 to win the 100 freestyle and touched in 1:11.82 in
the 150 freestyle. Kalisz took the top spots in the 300 butterfly and
300 breaststroke with times of 2:48.15 and 3:10.04, respectively. He
also finished first with a 2:47.55 in the 300 individual medley while
swimming exhibition.
The Bulldogs started the day with a
first-place finish in the 200 medley relay. The team of Taylor Dale,
Nicolas Fink, Doug Reynolds and Michael Trice put up a time of 1:30.59
to take the victory.
Andrew Gemmell claimed the 2,000
freestyle with a 19:01.01. In the 150 backstroke, Georgia had a
1-2-3-4 finish, with Ty Stewart's 1:19.12 winning the event. Fink
posted a 1:31.09 in the 150 breaststroke. Stewart's second victory of
the day came with a 2:50.23 in the 300 backstroke. While swimming
exhibition, Trice, Fink and Koski swam to a 2:07.33 win in the 6x50
freestyle relay in the final event of the afternoon.
Melanie
Margalis came in big for Georgia with four top times. She posted times
of 1:26.28 in the 150 backstroke and 1:18.51 in the 150 freestyle, as
well as opened and closed the meet on winning relay teams. First in the
200 medley relay, Margalis swam in the second spot on a team with
Olivia Smoliga, Lauren Harrington and Chantal Van Landeghem to a time
of 1:40.95. The team of Shannon Vreeland, Brittany MacLean and Margalis
put up a 2:22.53 in the 6x50 freestyle relay.
In the long
battle of the 2,000 freestyle, Amber McDermott's 20:14.03 earned her
the top spot. Vreeland posted a 2:50.43 victory in the 300 freestyle.
Annie Zhu had winning swims in the 150 breaststroke with a time of
1:38.32 and the 300 breaststroke with a 3:30.91. Hali Flickinger also
put up multiple winning times. In the 300 butterfly, she touched with a
3:08.06. She also had victories in the 150 butterfly and 300 individual
medley, coming in at 1:27.80 and 3:12.15 respectively.
Other
individual winners for the Lady Bulldogs included Jessica Graber's
51.15 in the 100 freestyle and MacLean's 3:09.41 in the 300 backstroke.
Ann-Perry Blank posted a winning score of 322.42 in 3-meter diving.
