UF W-Tennis Caps Opening Weekend with Doubles Title at Wolverine Invitational

ANN ARBOR Mich. – UF freshman Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and junior Olivia Janowicz (Palm Bay, Fla.) were crowned doubles champions at the Univ. of Michigan Women’s Tennis Wolverine Invitational on Sunday at the Varsity Tennis Center.

The Gator pair capped the team’s first individual event of the season winning its third doubles match in as many days after posting an 8-2 victory against Iowa’s 58th-ranked Ruth Seaborne and Shelby Talcott on Sunday and accumulated the most points determined by the event’s guidelines.

Alexandra Cercone (Seminole, Fla.) and Sofie Oyen (Leopoldsburg, Belgium) earned an 8-4 win against Iowa’s Christina Harazin and Katie Zordani, while the Gator team of Caroline Hitimana (Waterloo, Belgium) and Brianna Morgan (Beverly Hills, Calif.) fell to Iowa’s Annette Dohanics and Morven McCulloch, 8-4.

On the singles court the Gators won five of six matches against members from Michigan on Sunday, highlighted by Janowicz’s 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 upset of No. 58 Brooke Bolender and completing her three-day event winning all three singles matches, as well as all three doubles contests. Collins also matched Janowicz by capturing all three singles matches, capped with Sunday’s 6-0, 6-2 decision over No. 100 Mimi Nguyen for her first collegiate win against a nationally-ranked opponent.

Oyen tallied a 3-0 singles record during the Gator’s opening weekend after taking down Ronit Yurovsky, 6-2, 6-2. Morgan and Hitimana also went 3-0 on the singles court, with Morgan earning a 6-4, 6-4 win against Any Zhu and Hitimana capturing the 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 mark versus Kristen Dodge.

“Overall, this was a very productive weekend,” UF associate head coach Dave Balogh said. “We improved every day and played better. We got closer to where we need to be heading into next weekend’s Riviera All-American Championships.”

Florida won 16 of 18 singles matches played during the three days, as well as four of nine on the doubles court.

Gator senior Lauren Embree (Marco Island, Fla.) is the only member of the team not in Ann Arbor, as she prepares to compete at an ITF professional tournament in Las Vegas, where qualifying action begins on Monday at the Amanda and Stacey Darling Memorial Tennis Center.

New up is the national Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, with Collins, Hitimana and Janowicz each starting their tournament run in the 64-player prequalifying event that will be played Sept. 29-30 at UCLA. Competitors must win three rounds to advance to the qualifying draw.
