Impressive Tournament Play Lands Embree in USTA/ITA Finals Match Set
GAINESVILLE, Fla. –
Following impressive performances the past two days, top seeded Lauren
Embree (Marco Island, Fla.) advanced to the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional
Singles Championship scheduled for Monday at 10 a.m. ET at the Ring
Tennis Complex at the University of Florida. Embree will match up
against the fourth seed, Chelsey Gullickson of the University of
Georgia. “They
played here last year and it was a tie break for the third set. It was
one of those thrillers and Lauren was able to win,” head coach Roland
Thornqvist explained about Embree’s match last year against Gullickson.
“Gullickson today, was some of the best tennis I’ve seen her play.
Hopefully she spent all her bullets but it will be a tough match,
regardless.” “Last time we played we were at home and it was a
really long, really good match,” Embree shared. “It should be a really
good match.” Admission to all matches is free. Embree faced off
against Herring in the main draw singles quarterfinal round and got out
to a quick 2-0 lead before Herring was forced to retire after
sustaining a lower leg injury. In the semifinal round, a well-rested
Embree defeated Georgia Tech’s O’Neill in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. “Overall,
she’s getting better. She’s thinking more on the court and I could see
that in yesterday’s match against Vasenia,” Thornqvist said about
Embree. Olivia Janowicz (Palm Bay, Fla.)/Caroline Hitimana
(Waterloo, Belgium) faced fourth seeded Gullickson/Lilly Kimbell in the
doubles semifinals round. Janowicz/Hitimana got out to a quick 1-0 lead
but, even quicker, fell behind 2-1. The UF doubles team then rattled
off three straight games to make it 4-2. The Georgia doubles team
fought back to tie it up at 5-5. Gullickson/Kimbell took the next two
games to take the lead 7-5 over Janowicz/Hitimana before finishing them
off, 8-5, in a tightly contested deciding game. “I thought we were
the better team until 5-3 and we sort of got small,” Thornqvist
said “We stopped moving and made some untimely errors but we got
an idea of what we need to do when those to play together to be a good
team.” The doubles finals, which will take place after completion of
the singles finals, will be all Red and Black as the second seeded Kate
Fuller/Lauren Herring from UGA take on the fourth seeded
Gullickson/Kimbell. Janowicz battled with third seeded Jillian
O’Neill from Georgia Tech in the main draw singles quarterfinal round.
O’Neill stole the first set in a tie break, 7-6 (4), but Janowicz
stormed back to win the next set, 6-3. Janowicz dropped the first
two games of the deciding set and went on to lose the set, 3-6. Sophomore
Sofie Oyen (Leopoldsburg, Belgium) squared off against the two seed,
Anna Bartenstein, from the University of Miami, in the singles
quarterfinal round. Bartenstein got off to a quick start and took the
first set 6-2 but Oyen struck back and took the second set 6-4. In the
third and final set, Oyen, swiftly, got out to a 4-0 lead and put away
Bartenstein, 6-1. “Bartenstein’s tough and she doesn’t usually beat
herself,” acknowledges Thornqvist “It was nice to see Sofie buckle down
and grind when she had to and put extra balls into play and be creative
when the opportunity arose. I’m very happy with that win. It was a
great win for Sofie. Senior Joanna Mather (Duluth, Ga.) took the
court against four seed Gullickson in the main draw singles
quarterfinal round but failed to gain any momentum. Gullickson defeated
Mather in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. Following her quarterfinal win,
Oyen met Georgia’s Gullickson in the semifinals. Gullickson captured
the first set and outlasted Oyen in the second to advance to the finals
in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.” The University of Florida women’s
tennis team plays host this weekend to its lone home event of the 2011
fall season - the 2011 USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships, Oct.
