UF’s Caroline Hitimana Wins Singles Tennis Title at Freeman Memorial

LAS VEGAS – The University of Florida’s Caroline Hitimana (Waterloo, Belgium) defeated Duke’s Ester Goldfeld and captured the 10th annual Freeman Memorial Championships consolation singles title on Sunday afternoon at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the UNLV campus.

The Gator junior earned a hard-fought 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (10-4) decision to win the second singles championship of her career. She also won three matches en route to capturing the Flight 3A draw of the SEC Coaches Fall Classic during the 2010 fall season.

Hitimana moved into the consolation draw after she lost her first -round match on Friday to Southern California’s 19th-ranked and fifth seeded Zoe Sandalis, who upset Stanford’s top-ranked Mallory Burdette in Sunday’s Flight One singles final on Sunday.

UF sophomore Alex Cercone (Seminole, Fla.) was in action, as well on Sunday, earning a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory against UNLV’s Aleksandra Josifoska in an added match.

This event is the last individual singles and doubles competition of the year until the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.

The next action for Florida is on Wed., January 25, when the top-ranked Gators open their 2011-12 dual match season playing host to Troy beginning at 3 p.m. at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex where admission to all regular-season matches is free.
