Troy Tops Auburn 7-1
Troy, Ala. –
The Troy Trojans took advantage of two Auburn errors to score five runs
in the second inning and cruised to a 7-1 victory over the No. 21
Tigers’ softball team Wednesday night. Auburn
dropped to 23-7 overall, while Troy improved to 19-7. The Tigers return
home to host the Kentucky Wildcats in a three-game series beginning
Friday at 6 p.m. CT at Jane B. Moore Field. “We
made a lot of mistakes tonight and Troy capitalized on them,” Auburn
head coach Tina Deese said. “You have to give Troy credit, they came
out ready to play and they took it to us tonight.” Jenee
Loree started and took the loss to fall to 8-3. Loree allowed four
runs, one earned, on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts in one
and one-third innings. Angel Bunner relieved Loree in the second inning
and pitched two and two-third innings allowing three runs, all earned,
on seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Ashley
Rainey started and earned the complete-game win for Troy to improve to
9-3. Rainey allowed one run, earned, on four hits with one walk and two
strikeouts. Troy
put a five-spot up in the bottom of the second inning. Michelle Hewett
led off with a triple to center and came in to score when Sarah Shields
followed with a single to left. Shields took second on the play when
Baylee Stephens booted the ball while attempting to scoop it up in left
field. After Madison Rich was put in to run
for Shields, a sac bunt moved her to third. That was followed by a
single from Rainey to center that scored Rich for a 2-0 lead for Troy.
Sarah Harris followed with a fly ball to right that Amber Harrison
missed, allowing Harris to reach on an error and put Rainey at second. Bunner
relieved Loree after the error on Harris’ fly ball and Bunner quickly
picked up the second out with a swinging strikeout of Hannah Renn.
Kelly Luquette made it a 3-0 game with an infield single that took a
high bounce off a charging Lauren Guzman at shortstop. Harris scored on
the play for Troy. With two on and two outs, Nikki Hollett laced a
double to center that scored both runners to make a 5-0 game. In
the bottom of the fourth, Harris reached on a single to center and took
third on a double to the gap in right-center by Renn. Luquette followed
with a sac fly to right that plated Harris to make it a 6-0 game. Renn
took third on the play and came in to score on a one-out single by
Hollett to give Troy a 7-0 lead. The Tigers
broke the shutout bid in the top of the sixth inning. Stephens led off
with a double to center and moved to third on a ground out by Branndi
Melero. With two outs, Caitlin Jordan laced a double to right to score
Stephens for the final 7-1 margin.
