Auburn Soccer Tallies Third-Straight Double-Overtime Tie; 1-1 With Missouri
COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The
Auburn University soccer team went to its third-straight
double-overtime Sunday afternoon and ended up with its third-straight
conference tie. After going toe-to-toe with Missouri through 110
minutes of play, Auburn tied Missouri, 1-1, for its third-straight
point in Southeastern Conference play.
Freshman Casie Ramsier
netted her team-leading seventh goal of the year early in the second
half to give Auburn (4-8-4, 0-5-3 SEC) the early 1-0 lead, but Missouri
(7-7-2, 3-3-2 SEC) answered back just five minutes later to even the
match at one. For Auburn it is the team’s fifth overtime match of the
season and fourth to go to double overtime.
Ramsier’s goal came
on a nice breakaway where she split the defense and then stayed upright
when the keeper came out of the box to make the tackle. Ramsier
scurried back to the ball and took the right foot straight into the
empty net.
“It was another great SEC game,” Auburn head coach
Karen Hoppa said. “This team is showing that they’re good enough to
play with anyone in the SEC, the heartbreak is we’re not getting the
result. We’re getting ties and we need wins. Our kids are playing their
hearts out and we’re just not getting the result right now. I’m proud
of how they’ve played two 110 minute matches in a weekend. It’s growing
pains for sure, but I’m real proud of how they’re playing.”
Both
defenses played stout in the first 45 minutes as only five shots on
goal were made between both teams. Auburn did have two of those shots
as the Orange and Blue offense found holes in the Missouri defense to
get crosses down in the box multiple times. Unfortunately, Missouri
made the saves each time. On the opposite end, junior Alicen Wright
continued her string of strong matches making three of her six saves in
the first period.
In the second half, Auburn finally found the
back of the net after Casie Ramsier’s unassisted goal in the 51st
minute of play. However, Missouri answered right back with a goal of
their own in the 56th minute from Lauren Selaiden, her fourth of the
season off the assist from Kaysie Clarke.
With plenty of time
left in the second period, it seemed Auburn was going to have plenty of
time to hit the game-winner, but only three shots on goal were made for
the remainder of the match, including the two overtimes.
Auburn
will return to the AU Soccer Complex this Friday to face Arkansas at 7
p.m. It will then conduct Senior Day ceremonies on Sunday before its
match with Vanderbilt at 2 p.m. Before the match, seniors Bianca
Sierra, Kim Spence and Ashley Kotero will be honored for their time on
The Plains.
