MASON ON DOAK WALKER AWARD WATCH LIST
Dallas, Texas - Auburn
junior Tre Mason was named a Doak Walker Award preseason candidate for
the nation's top college running back, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum
announced on Thursday.
Mason, a preseason All-SEC second-team
selection, rushed for a team-high 1,002 yards and eight touchdowns last
season and was the first non-quarterback to lead Auburn in total
offense for a season since Bo Jackson in 1985.
"The opportunity
to play college football is a blessing from God, and any recognition is
also a blessing," said Mason. "I am going to keep striving for success
as we get ready for the season ahead."
Mason, a 5-foot-10,
196-pound Palm Beach, Fla., native, started six games for the Tigers
last year after midseason. He rushed for a career-high 181 yards vs.
Alabama A&M with a pair of touchdowns, including an 86-yarder that
was the fourth longest rushing play in Auburn history and the seventh
longest play from scrimmage.
He had three 100-yard rushing
performances including 152 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries vs. New
Mexico State and 104 yards in the season opener vs. Clemson.
The
PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name the semifinalists
on November 14, and the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee
will cast votes to determine the finalists, who will be announced on
November 25. The committee will cast a second vote beginning on
December 2 to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee
consists of former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs,
media members and selected special representatives.
The
recipient of the 2013 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The
Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 12, on ESPN.
The Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet will be held in Dallas,
Texas, in February 2013.
The award, in its 24nd year, is named
for SMU's three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the
only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good
academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other
students of the same classification. Go to www.doakwalkeraward.com for
