Arkansas Wins Dual Meet with LSU

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas swimming and diving team won its first SEC dual meet against LSU in Baton Rouge, La., on Saturday 180-120. The team collected wins in 13 of 16 events and recorded its 12th consecutive dual meet win.

"I think what we wanted to do was let the work show up, from what we’ve been working on deck, on the boards to more specifically building as a team," head coach Sean Schimmel said. "It was a really exciting day for Arkansas swimming and diving."

Arkansas got off to a successful start, sweeping the first five events of the meet.

Sophomore Anna Mayfield (San Antonio, Texas), junior Nikki Daniels (Wichita, Kan.), junior Susanna White (Forest, Va.) and sophomore Nina Drolc (Velenje, Slovenia) claimed first in the 200 medley relay in 1:40.75.

Arkansas took the top three finishes in the 1,000 freestyle, led by senior Nicole Menzel (Hilton Head, S.C.) in 10:14.14. Menzel was followed by senior Julia Kucherich (York, Pa.) in 10:16.81 and freshman Leia Bates (San Antonio, Texas) in 10:24.48.

Junior Lauren Jordan (Carmel, Ind.) out-touched LSU to win the 200 freestyle. Sophomore Maddie Monroe (Godfrey, Ill.) placed third with a time of 1:51.08.

Mayfield finished first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.44 and also took first in the 200 backstroke in 1:59.80. She was followed by Jordan, who took second place in 2:00.34.

Daniels and junior Julia Banach (Eilat, Israel) went one and two in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Daniel’s time of 1:02.04 was good for first in the 100 breaststroke, and she was followed closely by Banach with a time of 1:04.01. In the 200 breaststroke, Daniels took first in 2:14.88, and Banach placed second in 2:15.45.

In the 200 butterfly, freshman Katie Kearbey (Nevada, Mo.) placed third in 2:05.33.

Drolc won both the 50 and 100 freestyle. In the 50 freestyle, Drolc touched the wall in the 23.20, .17 quicker than second-place LSU. She turned around to finish the 100 freestyle in 50.28, followed closely by second-place Monroe in 51.39.

Senior Kesha Naylor (Saskatchewan, Canada) took second in 1-meter diving with a score of 284.10 and hit the boards again to place third in 3-meter diving with 275.40.

The Razorbacks showed their strength in distance swimming, again claiming the top spots in the 500 freestyle. Menzel led the group taking first in 4:56.82. Jordan placed second in 5:01.56 and Stoehr took third in 5:02.05.

White marked her third career win in the 100 butterfly, touching the wall in 54.77, and won her third event of the meet during the 200 IM in 2:01.64.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Drolc, Mayfield, Jordan and White ended the meet on a high note, placing first in 3:27.04.

"Moving forward, they’re getting some things down and gaining confidence that you get any time you win an SEC meet," Coach Schimmel said. "They did a good job today, and now it’s going through one week at a time and getting ready for our meet against Nebraska."
