Swimming and Diving Fall Wrap up
FAYETTEVILLE - The No.
25 University of Arkansas swimming and diving team had an eventful fall
season that culminated in a No. 25 national ranking and a second-place
finish at the Houston Cougar Swimming and Diving Invitational. The
Razorbacks made their presence known this fall season, falling to just
a pair of opponents, No. 2 Georgia and No. 4 Texas A&M. Arkansas
concludes the fall season with a 3-1 dual meet record and a 2-1 SEC
mark with conference dual-meet wins over Missouri and Kentucky in head
coach Sean Schimmel’s first season.
Record-breaking fall season
The
season was also highlighted with the breaking of six school-records,
one record falling multiple times at the hand of redshirt sophomore
Shana Lim, as she took down the 100 backstroke record three times this
fall.

Razorbacks honored by the SEC
Individually,
two Razorbacks were honored by the Southeastern Conference for their
performances in the pool as Nina Drolc (Oct. 30) and Anna Mayfield
(Nov. 18) were both named Freshmen of the Week.
Drolc was named
the Freshman of the Week for her performance in the triple-dual meet
against Missouri, Kentucky and Southern Illinois. The Razorbacks swept
all three opponents as Drolc tallied three event wins (100 freestyle,
200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay).
Mayfield had a banner
weekend at the Houston Cougar swimming and diving invitational, which
was highlighted by her record-breaking swim in the 200 freestyle, with
a time of 1:55.18.Mayfield also teamed with, Drolc, Maddie Monroe and
Susanna White to break the nine-year old Arkansas 400 freestyle relay
record. The freshman swam the third leg of the race and recorded the
second-fastest split of the group with a time of 49.67. The record time
of 3:19.56 currently ranks 17th nationally.
Naylor records first big invitational win
Junior
Kesha Naylor strung together a series of standout performances in
Houston to lead the Razorbacks on the boards. However it was her
platform performance that really took the cake. The Sasketchewan,
Canada native took first-place, beating out 37 other competitors with a
final score 276.00. The total was also the fifth-best score in school
history. It was Naylor’s first event win at a large invitational.
Daniels among the nation’s best
Daniels
had a breakout fall season. The sophomore recorded a school-record in
the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.12, which currently ranks 12th
nationally and third in the SEC. Daniels also clocked a time of 2:10.73
in the 200 breaststroke, which ranks 15th nationally.
Relay success
So
far this season the Razorbacks have teamed up to break three school
relay records. Their 200 medley (1:39.08) and 400 medley relay
(3:37.21) times both rank 14th in the nation. Arkansas’ time of 3:19.56
in the 400 freestyle relay ranks 17th in the nation and fifth in the
SEC.
Razorbacks in the national rankings
The
Razorbacks kicked off the 2012-13 season ranked No. 21 in the first
regular- season rankings release of the season. Arkansas has maintained
a spot in the ranks throughout the fall season, as they currently hold
the No. 25 slot.
Razorback Relays
The Razorbacks kicked
off the season at home, winning the first annual Razorback Relays with
a score of 526 points, defeating Vanderbilt, North Texas, SMU and
Missouri State. The Razorbacks finished the relays with nine event wins
out of 12 in the first meet of Schimmel’s tenure.
Razorbacks vs. Georgia
In
one of their toughest tests of the season, the Razorbacks took on the
second-ranked Georgia Bulldogs in their first dual meet of the season.
Arkansas fell in their annual Swim for the Cure meet by a score of
187-113. Despite the loss the Razorbacks had many highlights, including
Lim’s school record in the 100 backstroke, 54.95.
Razorbacks sweep opponents in triple-dual meet
The
Razorbacks traveled to Columbia, Mo., to take on Missouri, Kentucky and
Southern Illinois in a triple-dual meet. Arkansas swept their three
opponents, tallying 10 event wins and three one-two finishes on the
day. The sweep improved Arkansas to a 3-1 overall record in dual meets
and a 2-1 SEC record.
Razorbacks place second in Houston
In
their final meet of the fall season, the team traveled to Houston,
Texas, to take on 14 other schools at the Houston Cougar Swimming and
Diving Invitational. While in Houston, the Razorbacks strung together
six school record-breaking swims en route to a second-place finish in
Houston. Arkansas scored 699.50 points, defeating No. 17 LSU by 249
points, as only No. 4 Texas A&M finished the invitational with more
points. The Razorbacks also defeated 12 other schools.
Razorbacks in Puerto Rico
The
Razorbacks spent some time over their holiday break in Puerto Rico as a
part of their winter training trip from. The team competed against the
University of Chicago while training in Puerto Rico. The training trip
was put in place to further prepare the team for the back end of the
season.
