BOREN, SZEKELY TO COMPETE IN NCAA SINGLES/DOUBLES FIELD
The duo will compete in both the NCAA individual singles and doubles championship
KNOXVILLE,
Tenn. – In addition to the team earning a spot in the NCAA Championship
as announced Tuesday, the University of Tennessee women’s tennis duo of
Brynn Boren and Kata Szekely have earned spots in the NCAA singles and
doubles championships.
The 2013 NCAA Tennis
Championships will be held in Champaign, Ill. from May 16-27. The team
championships will be held the first week spanning from May 16-21,
while the final six days (May 22-27) will feature the men's and women's
64-player singles and 32-player doubles championships.
“Brynn
and Kata both have had tremendous seasons both individually and
together,” said co-head coach Mike Patrick. “Earning a seed in the
doubles tournament and being All-Americans entering the championship is
a great honor. I am happy for Kata who marks her second season in a row
as an All-American and for Brynn who was named All-American for her
first time.”
"It is great making the tournament,"
said senior Kata Szekely. "It is especially nice being seeded in
doubles and earning All-American honors entering the tournament. That
is what we have been working for all year so it is an incredible
accomplishment and takes a lot of pressure off of us."
This
marks the seventh consecutive season that the Lady Vols have been
represented in both singles and doubles play at the NCAA Individual
Championships and the eighth straight year that a Lady Vol has reached
the singles championship.
Overall Lady Vols have made the singles field 23 times and the doubles field 19 times beginning in 1982.
The
duo will compete together for the first time in the NCAA Doubles
Championship, but this season have already accumulated 36 doubles
victories and were ranked in the top-5 of the ITA Polls for the entire
2013 spring season.
Boren will compete in her
third straight singles championship, earning the honor in each of her
season’s on Rocky Top. This season she has notched a 24-15 singles
record from the No. 1 position including a 13-7 record in dual match
play.
Szekely finds a spot in the singles
championship for the second straight season. She has put together a
31-9 record this season including a 16-3 dual match record, 10-2 in
conference action.
“We look forward to competing
as a team,” said Patrick, “but they have a lot to look forward to in
the individual tournament. It is a huge honor to just be a part of.”
The Lady Vols will begin action in the NCAA Team Championships on Friday, May 10 at 10 a.m. against VCU in Chapel Hill, N.C.
