Underclassmen Throwers Lead UT on Day Three of SEC Championships

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Sophomore Matthew Hoty and freshman Cassie Wertman led Tennessee on the third day of competition at the SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Walton Stadium in Columbia, Mo.

In his second throw in the men’s shot put competition, Hoty threw 18.87m/61-feet, 11-inches holding the top spot through five rounds. Auburn’s Marcus Popenfoose tossed an 18.95m/62-2.25 mark in his final attempt, leaving Hoty the final toss of the competition. Despite his teammates’ cheers, Hoty fell short of catching Popenfoose on his final mark, but claimed runner-up honors.

“It was definitely my best series ever,” Hoty said. “I just didn’t get that one throw out there. I had a lot of good throws, but not that one great throw. I was in first until the second to last round. Marcus (Popenfoose) got me. I was kind of disappointed. I thought I was going to catch the throw at the end. Everyone was getting hyped. I felt the energy, but it just didn’t happen today. It was a good day. I have to have some of these days to build moving forward.”

Hoty’s efforts added eight points for the UT men, while his sophomore teammate Tavis Bailey finished fifth with his best mark of 18.03m/59-2, contributing four more points.

“Hopefully this is a good building block for everyone else and they see how to complete,” Hoty said. “We have to score some points. We can’t be second to last like last year. We have to get up there and I think we can. We just have to get out there and do it.”

Cassie Wertman had the wind on her side on Saturday, as the freshman placed fourth in the women’s discus throw. The Holland, Ind., native started off the event with a personal best throw of 50.08m/164-4, which would catapult her into the finals.

“The first throw I went in with no nerves, no pressure,” Wertman said. “The first throw is normally the safe throw. I think that just helped me get into position and stay loose. I just caught everything right, including the wind and I hit positions pretty well.”

Wertman didn’t hit the 50-meter mark on her next five throws, but would still earn five points for the Lady Vols with her fourth-place finish.

“It’s pretty big to score some points for my team in an event that I wasn’t even supposed to score at or make finals,” Wertman said. “It feels pretty good. I hope we get the ball rolling. I think we can do well this year.”

Along with Wertman, junior Aslynn Halvorson placed ninth in the event with a 47.26m/155-1 mark, freshman Katelyn Williams finished 15th with a throw of 42.69m/140-0 and senior Jessie Harrison placed 18th.

The women earned four and a half points from the pole vault as junior Linda Hadfield placed fifth and sophomore Erin Champion finished seventh, after the duo cleared 3.95m/12-11.5.

Senior Bianca Blair qualified for the 100m hurdles finals after finishing preliminaries in a time of 13.43 (w: +3.2). Senior Kia Jackson will also see the finals on Sunday in the 100m after qualifying with a 11.42 (w: +3.9) time.

On the men’s side, junior Daniel Tobin added a point for the UT men with his eighth-place finish in the 3000m steeplechase, as he finished in a time of 9:17.80. Freshman Kyle Quinn also contributed one point to the men’s total as he placed eighth in the javelin throw with a mark of 61.85m/202-11.

Heading into the final day, the Vols are in sixth place with 18 points, while the Lady Vols are in 12th with 10.5 points. Arkansas leads both the women’s and men’s team standings with 50 and 57 points, respectively.

The last day of the conference competition kicks off at 1 p.m. CT/2 p.m. ET Sunday with the women’s javelin throw and men’s triple jump.
