Tennessee Softball: Chavanne Sparks USA Rally In 4-1 Win Over California A's
SURREY, Canada -- Raven
Chavanne sparked a fourth-inning rally and Lauren Gibson had an RBI
double to help Team USA to a 4-1 win over the California A's on Tuesday
in the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship.
After
falling behind, 1-0, in the first inning, Team USA used a three-run
surge in the bottom of the fourth to take control of the game. The Red,
White and Blue added one more run in the fifth.
Gibson
went 1-for-3 with an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth. The double
marked her fifth consecutive game with a hit for Team USA this summer.
She is the only Team USA player with a hit in each game she has had a
plate appearance in this summer.
Cheridan Hawkins
started the game for Team USA and earned the win after striking out
nine and allowing one earned run on four hits and two walks over 4.2
frames. Valerie Arioto tossed 1.1 scoreless relief frames to earn the
save. Sara Nevins threw a scoreless seventh inning.
Paige
Parker started for the California A's and took the loss after throwing
four innings and allowing three earned runs. Sara Driesenga threw two
relief innings with one earned run allowed.
California jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Lyndsay Doyle hit a solo home run off Hawkins.
Chavanne
sparked Team USA's rally in the bottom of the fourth, swinging at the
first pitch she saw from Parker and connecting for a single. Four
batters later, Amber Freeman hit a two-out, two-RBI double to score
Chavanne and Arioto and give the Stars and Stripes the lead. Two
batters later, Taylor Thorn knocked an RBI double to score Freeman.
Gibson
extended Team USA's lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth with one
out. She connected on a full-count pitch from Driesenga for an RBI
double that brought home Michelle Moultrie from third base.
