Tennessee Falls at Georgia Pool

The UT men (5-3, 3-1 SEC) lost 161.5-135.5 to the Bulldogs, while the Tennessee women (7-1, 3-1) lost their first meet of the season to defending NCAA champion Georgia 177.5-114.5,

"Georgia was just outstanding today, both the men and the women," Tennessee head coach Matt Kredich said. "We swam well, but they were just better today. The story today was how we reacted to close races we thought we were going to win. I thought the men and women handled that well.

"It showed maturity. We've had meets before where especially when our men lost early, we'd get deflated."

The meet helped Tennessee get used to Georgia's home waters of Gabrielsen Natatorium where the SEC Championships will be held next month.

Among the highlights of the conference meet preview included another sweep of the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events by Sean Lehane. Freshman Luke Percy was a two-event winner for a second time, taking first in the 50 and 100 freestyle.

Redshirt sophomore Mauricio Robles was a winner in the diving well on the men's side, taking first in the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard competitions.

Junior Molly Hannis provided an individual victory on the women's side. After losing the 100 breaststroke, she rebounded to win the 200 breaststroke later in the meet.

Saturday marked the final road dual meet for Tennessee this season. UT hosts Florida next Saturday at 10 a.m. Eleven seniors will be honored before the meet.

INSIDE THE MEN'S RACES

Once again, Sean Lehane and Luke Percy were multi-race winners for the Tennessee men.
Lehane won the 100 backstroke in 48.15, just beating out Georgia's Taylor Dale by one hundredths of a second. He had an easier time winning the 200 backstroke, taking first by more than a second in 1:44.09. Both were NCAA B-cut times.

Percy won multiple races for the first time in his career to start 2014 against Virginia Tech and Missouri, and he pulled off the feat again Saturday. He won the 50 freestyle in 20.25 and the 100 freestyle in 44.10, an NCAA B cut.

"Sean Lehane was great today," Kredich said. "He competed really well, so did Luke Percy. There were a few races we didn't win, but we competed really well, like Renato (Prono) in the 200 breaststroke."

Tennessee ended the meet strong with the fastest time in the 400 freestyle relay. Percy, Sam Rairden, Troy Tillman and Lehane won in 2:57.41.

Georgia competed in the final two events as exhibition. The performances did not count toward team scoring.

INSIDE THE WOMEN'S RACES

Junior Molly Hannis posted a pair of NCAA B-cut times in her usual breaststroke races. She was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.19) and bounced back later to win the 200 breaststroke (2:11.92).
Senior Lauren Solernou also continued dropping her backstroke times after missing most of the fall competition. Solernou, a member of two of Tennessee NCAA relay winning teams last year, scored an NCAA B-cut time of 54.57. She was also part of the A relay int he 200 medley relay (1:38.74 - NCAA B cut).

"Lauren was great today," Kredich said. "It was great to have her back. It gives the relay a lot of confidence. That was a big shot in the arm for us."

Tennessee's sprinters proved to be point-getters once again. Three Tennessee swimmers finished in the top five of the 50 freestyle: Faith Johnson (2nd, 22.77), Cherelle Thompson (3rd, 23.10) and Harper Bruens (5th, 23.11).

Georgia swam the last two swimming events as exhibition, so their performance did not count toward scoring. That was also the case with the 3-meter springboard.

INSIDE DIVING

Redshirt sophomore Mauricio Robles swept both the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions. He won the 3-meter by nearly 100 points in 384.23. He scored 363.00 on the 1 meter.
"Mauricio had a good day, winning both events handedly, which is what I anticipated," Tennessee diving coach Dave Parrington said. "He left some points on the table, but I'm pleased with his progress toward the SEC Championships."

Tori Lamp was third on the 3-meter with a score of 314.78, her highest score of the season. Samantha Lera took fourth in 277.58.

Lamp also had the third-highest score on the 1-meter (287.18) and Lera followed (270.45).

"You certainly have to give Georgia's women credit with their performances today," Parrington said. "I was pleased with the progress we made. She had a season high on the 3 meter and it turning things around. What we're trying to do is continue to prepare for SEC and we've made a lot of steps in that directions."
