TENNESSEE ROWING LAUNCHES COMPETITION SCHEDULE
With fall practices well
under way and morning rows alongside the sunrise every morning, the
rowing team announced their competitive racing schedule on Tuesday. The
Lady Volunteers open up their fall slate close to home in Chattanooga,
Tenn., at the Chattanooga Head Race. The regatta will be held in the
Tennessee River on October 12. Tennessee looks to continue
their past success at their 17th trip to the Chattanooga Head Race. The
Orange and White have earned a total of 70 medals at the event,
including four last season. At the 2012 race, the Lady Vols
participated in the Collegiate 8+ and the Collegiate 4+, bringing home
one gold, two silvers and 1 bronze. The following weekend
the team will travel to Durham, North Carolina where they will race the
Blue Devils of Duke University. The rowing team at Duke completed their
2013 spring campaign with a third place finish at the ACC
Championships. This will be the first head-to-head contest with Duke
for the Lady Vols. Tennessee then returns to Rocky Top for
the Secret City Head Race in nearby Oak Ridge on Melton Hill Lake on
October 26. The novice team will make their first appearance of the
season on Melton Hill Lake, last year the novice 8+ brought home a gold
medal. The Lady Vols wrap up their fall schedule back in
Chattanooga to race in the Head of the Hooch Regatta on Nov. 2-3. This
event is the largest head race in the Southeast and rivals the Head of
the Charles as one of the nation's top regattas. During the winter months the rowing team will continue to train on land to prepare for their spring campaign.
In
their first spring race of the season the team will travel to Orlando,
Florida for the warmer temperatures in February to compete against
Michigan and Central Florida in exhibition races. The last head-to-head
meeting for Tennessee and Central Florida was in 2012 where Tennessee
swept all races in Orlando. At the 2013 Conference USA Championships,
Tennessee placed second in the team standings while UCF secured the
eighth slot.
For the first time in program history
the Lady Vols will race head-to-head out of conference team North
Carolina on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge on March 1. This race will
also be an exhibition.
Closing out Tennesseeās
exhibition race schedule will be their second matchup of the season
with the Blue Devils of Duke University. This race will take place in
Oak Ridge on March 9.
Continuing to stay close to
home the Lady Vols will race in the Cardinal Invite in Oak Ridge.
Against Louisville last season, the Lady Vols fell to the Cardinals in
the V8+, 2V8+ and V4+; however, secured the first place slot in the
2V4+ across the 2,000-meter course.
Next up for
the Lady Vols will be a road trip to Clemson, South Carolina where the
team will race for the second year in the row in the Clemson
Invitational. Last season the Lady Vols brought home six medals, two
silver and four bronze.
In their first
head-to-head matchup since 2000, the Orange and White will host Iowa on
Melton Hill Lake on May 3. In 2000, the team secured the second place
slot in the 2V4+.
For the fourth straight year,
Tennessee Rowing will host the Conference USA Championships on Melton
Hill Lake in Oak Ridge on May 17. In 2010, the Lady Vols captured the
first-ever Conference USA Rowing Title at the Aramark Sprints. Last
season, the Orange and White fell to Oklahoma at the Conference USA
Championship by a team total of six points.
