SHIPMAN HOMERS, IVY RENFROE TOSSES ONE-HITTER AS UT DEFEATS NC STATE, 7-0, TO ADVANCE TO SUPER REGIONALS
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -
Madison Shipman had a two-run homer and drove in three and Ivy Renfroe
fanned five over seven shutout innings as Tennessee punched its sixth
trip to the NCAA Super Regionals with a 7-0 win over NC State on Sunday
in Game 6 of the Knoxville Regional.
The Lady Vols
(47-10) will now face Alabama in the Supers next weekend at Lee Stadium
while NC State finishes its season with a 35-20-1 record after making
its first NCAA appearance since 2007.
Renfroe helped Tennessee to its third shutout over the weekend as she and sister Ellen Renfroe combined for 23 scoreless innings to start the NCAA Tournament.
Shipman
finished the game 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, three RBIs and
three runs while Ivy Renfroe let up just one hit on the day, a single
up the middle to Lana Van Dyken in the third inning.
Raven
Chavanne went 2-for-3 and scored twice, moving her career runs total to
242 - a new Tennessee career record. Chavanne broke the previous record
of 241 held by Lindsay Schutlzer.
Tennessee scored two
in the first, two in the second and three in the fourth and controlled
the game from start to finish in the victory.
The Lady
Vols jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Chavanne opened the
game with a leadoff single up the middle. Two batters later, Shipman
ripped a hard-hit shot past the third baseman and Chavanne later
advanced on a wild pitch to give UT runners on the corners. Kat Dotson
sent a 1-2 pitch from Weiman through the right side to plate Chavanne.
The Lady Vols then pulled off a double steal with Shipman coming home
and Dotson moving to second to push the lead to 2-0.
In
the top of the second, Tennessee grew its lead to 4-0 thanks to one big
swing from Shipman. Chavanne hit a one-out double through the left side
and advanced to third when Lauren Gibson grounded out to second.
Shipman sent a 2-2 pitch sailing over the wall in right center for her
10th home run of the year and her first in over a month.
Tory
Lewis led off the fourth inning with a double to right field, her first
extra-base hit of the season. Chavanne moved her over to third with a
sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Shipman sent a pitch high down
the left field line that landed between the shortstop and the left
fielder for an RBI double. Two batters later, Cheyanne Tarango ripped a
two-out, two-RBI single to right field to push UT's lead to 7-0.
Chelsea Stanfield replaced Weiman in the circle to close out the inning.
The
Wolfpack threatened in the bottom of the seventh, working two pinch-hit
walks but Renfroe got the final two batters to pop out to end the
threat.
The Lady Vols return to action next weekend in the NCAA Super Regionals when they host No. 10 seed Alabama at Lee Stadium.
