OKLAHOMA
CITY –A two-out walkoff single up the middle by Tory Lewis handed the
University of Tennessee softball team the win over Washington on
Saturday in Game 5 of the Women’s College World Series.
Tennessee
will now play in Game 11 on Sunday at 6 p.m. on ESPN2 and will face the
winner of Game 9, which pits the winner of today’s Game 7 (Nebraska vs.
Florida) against the loser of Game 6 (Texas vs. Oklahoma).
Ellen
Renfroe took part in a pitcher’s duel with Washington junior Kaitlin
Inglesby as both juniors held their opponents scoreless until Lewis’
heroic hit. Renfroe pitched seven complete, giving up just two hits and
striking out 10 batters in the shutout.
Lewis
finished the game 3-for-4 while driving in the lone run of the game.
Also with multi-hit games for the Lady Vols were Lauren Gibson and
Cheyanne Tarango who each were 2-for-3 on the day against Inglesby.
Tarango
started the bottom of the seventh off with an infield single to the
shortstop and was replaced on first by senior Whitney Hammond who then
advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Melissa Brown.
After
Rainey Gaffin drew a walk to put runners on first and second, Hannah
Akamine laced a liner right back at Inglesby which the pitcher caught
and in an attempt to end the inning threw to first to try and double
off Gaffin. Instead the ball went errant and Hammond advanced to third
based setting up Lewis’ walkoff winner.
Prior to
the seventh inning heroics, the Lady Vols left 13 runners on the base
paths including leaving the bases loaded in the first, second and
fourth innings but needed just the one run to move past Washington and
continue in the winner's bracket.
With the win, the Lady Vols remained perfect in the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
