Henderson, William Champs At Tennessee Fall Invite

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Juniors Joanna Henderson and Caitlyn Williams swept the singles and doubles titles for the University of Tennessee women’s tennis team at the Tennessee Fall Invitational Sunday afternoon.

The duo combined for the tournament’s doubles title while Henderson went 3-0 at flight one singles to garner singles championship honors.

“It was great for both of them to go out there, compete and win today,” said co-head coach Sonia Hahn-Patrick. “Both Jo and Caitlyn fought hard in their matches and for Caitlyn to get a win in her first singles match of the season is great for her.”

It was the second year in a row that Tennessee earned both honors as Kata Szekely and Brynn Boren completed the feat for the Lady Vols last season.

The road to the singles championship was not easy for Henderson who started the day off with a 6-7 (5) tiebreak loss. But she battled back to earn 6-4, 6-4 victories in the next two sets and ultimately the win.

Henderson and Williams started the day off right with an 8-6 victory during the doubles round over Gabriella Desantis/Miho Kowase of Ohio State to come away with the tournament title.

The Lady Vols jumped out to an early lead and fought to hang on to win the match. Tennessee fell at flight two and three doubles by 8-0 and 8-6 scores.

The Lady Vols won five of their six singles matches on the day.

The day started off as Brittany Lindl won handedly and was the first Lady Vol off the court with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at flight four. Her classmate Victoria Olivarez followed suit with a 6-1, 6-1 win at flight six to earn their second wins on the weekend.

Laurence Guevremont captured her third victory of the weekend, remaining perfect in singles action with a 6-2, 6-2 win at flight five singles.

Williams returned to the court in singles action garnering a hard-fought 7-6 (4), 7-5 win at flight two over No. 55 Kelsey Dieters .

Some of the Lady Vols will be back in action next weekend at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala from Nov. 1-3.
