CHAVANNE HOMERS AS NO. 2 UT WINS, 9-1 (5), TO SWEEP OLE MISS
OXFORD, Miss. - Raven
Chavanne went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and Ellen Renfroe struck out
five over five innings as No. 2 Tennessee defeated Ole Miss, 9-1, in
five innings on Sunday to complete the series streak and extend its
winning streak to 19 games.
Tennessee (42-6, 15-3
SEC) scored four in the first, three in the third and four in the
second. Ole Miss (22-29, 2-19 SEC) scored its lone run in the second.
Chavanne
tallied one homer, a pair of singles, two RBIs, two runs and one stolen
base in the win. Lauren Gibson, completed an outstanding week at the
plate, going 1-for-1 with a two-RBI hit, two walks and two runs scored.
Melissa Davin drove and Cheyanne Tarango each drove in two runs.
Ellen
Renfroe (15-1) earned the win after striking out five over five innings
with one earned run allowed. The win marked her eighth complete game of
the season.
Carly Hummel (11-16) took the loss
after allowing seven runs (six earned) over three innings pitched.
Erinn Jayjohn allowed two earned runs in two relief innings.
Tennessee
took command early with a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Chavanne got
things going with a leadoff single up the middle and Kat Dotson
advanced her to third base on a sacrifice bunt and a fielding error at
first. Gibson followed with a two-RBI hit to center field off an 0-2
pitch from Hummel. Two batters later, Davin smashed a 2-2 pitch for a
two-run homer to right center.
Ole Miss pulled to
within 4-1 in the bottom of the second when Bri Payne hit a two-out
double off the wall in left center to score Haley Culley from first
base.
In the top of the third, UT extended its
lead to 7-1. With one on and one out, Lexi Overstreet clubbed an RBI
double to right center to score pinch-runner Jennifer Burroughs from
first base. With two outs two batters later, Chavanne smashed a 2-0
pitch over the wall in right center for a two-run jack and her sixth
home run of the season.
Tennessee put the game out
of reach in the top of the fourth. Gibson drew a four-pitch walk and
Madison Shipman followed with a single through the left side to start
the inning. Three batters later, Tarango ripped a two-out, two-RBI
single through the left side with Shipman sliding in safe under the tag
for UT's ninth run of the day.
Gibson enjoyed a
superb series against Ole Miss this weekend, batting .800 (8-for-10
with four homers, three doubles, 15 RBIs, seven runs and two walks. She
had an astronomical slugging percentage of 2.300 and an outstanding
.833 on-base percentage. Chavanne was also stellar at the plate in
Oxford, batting .636 (7-for-11) with two homers, one double, five RBIs
, eight runs and two stolen bases.
Gibson's
numbers for the week, which includes a 9-0 win over Appalachian State
on Tuesday, were very impressive. The senior from Pasadena, Md., hit
.818 (9-for-11) on the week with five homers, three doubles, 18 RBIs,
eight runs and three walks. Her OPS on the week was 3.255 (2.455
slugging percentage, .800 on-base percentage).
The
Lady Vols will next host James Madison in a doubleheader on Wednesday,
April 24, starting at 5 p.m. Kids 12 and under get in free and receive
a complimentary reserved bleacher back ticket. UT closes out its
regular season home schedule Friday through Sunday with a three-game
series against Arkansas. Tennessee will celebrate its second Senior Day
of 2013 on April 27, honoring Raven Chavanne and Whitney Hammond before
the game.
