Bailey Takes 19th In NCAA Championship Discus Competition

EUGENE, Ore. – The only Tennessee track & field performer on day three of the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships, sophomore thrower Tavis Bailey placed 19th in the men’s discus competition with a mark of 177-feet, 9-inches (54.18m) on Friday evening at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

Throwing ninth in the opening heat, Bailey fouled on his opening throw of the event, stepping just outside the circle. It was the Kannapolis, N.C., native’s second throw that earned him the mark, hitting 54.18-meters. Bailey, who came in with a lifetime best throw of 196-6 (59.91m) set earlier this season, also fouled on his third and final attempt. He was the last of 24 qualifiers at the NCAA Preliminary meets.

UCLA redshirt junior Julian Wruck, who won the 2011 NCAA discus crown with Texas Tech, claimed his second NCAA title in the event with a winning mark of 213-1 (64.94m) on his sixth and final throw. Wruck bested defending champion Chad Wright of Nebraska, who notched a personal record of 209-1 (63.74m) on his opening attempt of the competition.

Making his first NCAA appearance, Vol redshirt freshman Kyle Quinn will conclude the meet for UT on Saturday in the men’s javelin throw at 3:30 p.m. ET.
