Moultrie Taken In First Round By Miami, Then Traded To Philadelphia
STARKVILLE,
Miss. – Thursday night, Arnett Moultrie became the first Mississippi
State player since 2010 to be selected in the NBA Draft when the Miami
Heat took him with the 27th overall pick. Moments later, however, the NBA champions traded the Memphis native to the Philadelphia 76ers. Moultrie
became the first Bulldog player to be taken in the first round since
1996 when Erick Dampier (Indiana) and Dontae’ Jones (New York) were
drafted 10th and 21st, respectively. The last MSU player drafted was Jarvis Varnado in the second round (41st), also by the Miami Heat in 2010. In
all, 24 former MSU players have now been drafted, with the first being
Herb Hargett in 1951 by the Ft. Wayne Pistons with the fourth overall
pick. Moultrie, who played just one year at MSU after
transferring from UTEP, is the 9th Bulldog to be selected in the first
round. The highest MSU player taken was hall of famer Bailey Howell at
No. 2 by Detroit in 1959. An All-SEC performer this past
year in leading the Bulldogs to a 21-12 ledger, Moultrie averaged 16.4
points a game and led the SEC with 10.5 rebounds while finishing second
with 18 double-doubles.
