MSU Women’s Tennis Sweeps Sunday Doubleheader
Following
a morning of showers and storms, the Mississippi State women’s tennis
team (4-2) completed a sweep of Samford (3-1) 4-0 and UAB (2-4) 4-1
Sunday afternoon on the MSU campus.
“We didn’t
play our best tennis today, but I am proud of the way the girls fought
for their wins,” head coach Daryl Greenan said. “Both opponents
provided some interesting challenges and I am just happy we were able
to play well enough to come out on top. We are going to continue to
make adjustments and find ways to get better each week.”
Match 1 - MSU 4, Samford 0
State
jumped out to an early lead by taking the doubles point against
Samford. On court 3, MSU’s Sara Lizariturry and Anastasia Rentouli made
quick work of SU’s Arianna Beltrame and Grace Jennings, 6-2. Clinching
the doubles point on court 2, State’s Magda Adaloglou and Janina Braun
held off Samford’s Holly Horsfall and Elsa Pool 6-3. The remaining
match was suspended at 5-all between MSU’s Madison Harrison and
Khrystyna Vozniak and the Samford Bulldog duo of Ellie Gerlach and Roos
van der Zwaan.
The Maroon & White continued
its dominating ways in singles. On court 6, MSU’s Vozniak routed SU’s
Jennings 6-2, 6-1. Following close behind at No. 2, State’s Harrison
posted a straight-set victory against Samford’s van der Zwaan 6-2, 6-2.
The clincher came on court 1 as MSU’s Braun
posted her first win at the top position against SU’s Gerlach 6-2, 6-4.
MSU held one-set leads in two of the three matches that were suspended
upon the clinch.
Match 2 - MSU 4, UAB 1
The
second half of the doubleheader was very similar to the first with the
Bulldogs taking the doubles point. Once again, court 3 was the first to
finish with Lizariturry and Rentouli blanking UAB’s Jana Hecking and
Natalie Voss, 6-0. Following on court 2, State’s Adaloglou and Braun
vanquished the Blazer duo of Dominika Hrabalova and Alex Shchipipakina,
6-2. Harrison and Vozniak had just gone up a break at 5-4 on court 1
when play was suspended.
Continuing the momentum
into singles, Bulldog Rentouli was the first off the court with an
impressive 6-0, 6-1 win against Blazer Hrabalova at No. 3. UAB got its
single point of the day as Hecking defeated State’s Lizariturry,
7-6(2), on court 4after Lizariturry was forced to retire due to injury.
Extending
her winning streak to five matches, MSU’s Vozniak overpowered SU’s
Sonia Grzywocz 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 to extend the Bulldog lead 3-1.
Clinching the match, the State true freshman Adaloglou outlasted UAB’s
Hana Sisirak 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot.
In the
two matches that were suspended, State’s Caroline Kelly led 6-1, 5-3
over UAB’s Natalie Voss on court 6. At No. 1, State’s Braun was down a
set to the Blazers’ Shchipakina but led 5-4 in the second.
Next Up For MSU…
State
travels to Hammond, La., to face Southeastern Louisiana and Southern
University next weekend. The Bulldogs will battle the Lions on Friday,
February 9, at 1 p.m. CT. On Sunday, MSU will remain in Hammond to face
the Jaguars in a neutral site contest at 11 a.m. CT.
