Gamecocks Win Two Singles Titles at Furman Fall Classic
Andersson, Guzairova Remain Unbeaten in 2011
GREENVILLE, S.C. (Sept.
25, 2011) — Josefin Andersson and Dina Guzairova from the South
Carolina women’s tennis team won their respective singles flights
Sunday at the Furman Fall Classic in Greenville, S.C. Andersson and
Guzairova both moved to 5-0 this fall after consecutive undefeated
weekends to open the season.
Andersson defeated Clemson’s Monia
Kochanova in the championship match 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 to win flight six.
In flight seven, Guzairova beat Olivia Maurice from Furman 6-3, 6-2.
The
Gamecocks picked up two runners-up trophies in flights two and three.
In flight two, Jaklin Alawi lost in three sets to No. 55 Alex Guarachi
of Alabama 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, and No. 68 Dijana Stojic suffered a 4-6, 6-1,
6-4 setback to Kata Szekely of Tennessee in the finals of flight three.
Dominika
Kanakova and Adriana Pereira secured third place in flights five and
six. Kanakova won by default over Carolina de los Santos of Florida
State and Pereira defeated Alabama’s Emily Zabor 6-1, 4-6, 7-6.
South
Carolina returns to action next weekend competing in the Wildcat
Invitational hosted by Northwestern in Evanston, Ill., beginning Friday
and ending Sunday.
