GAMECOCKS ASSIST WOUNDED WARRIOR PROJECT

Over $60,000 Raised for Non-Profit Organization

COLUMBIA, S.C.– The University of South Carolina football program’s participation in the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) helped net the organization approximately $60,000 from the 2011 auction items, it was announced today.

“Once again, the University of South Carolina was proud to team up with Under Armour to help out the Wounded Warrior Project,” said Athletics Director Eric Hyman. “We are pleased to have not only been able to provide them with financial assistance, but have been able to gain awareness for this outstanding organization and cause.”

The on-line auction of custom Under Armour jerseys worn by the University of South Carolina football players in pregame warmups for the October 1 game against the Auburn Tigers netted over $58,000. The 119 jerseys, which included the warrior character traits of Duty, Honor, Courage, Commitment, Integrity, Country and Service in place of the players’ names, were sold for an average of nearly $500 with six jerseys selling for over $1,000. The highest bid went for jersey number 7 at $3,510. In addition, 10 custom-made footballs were autographed by the two head coaches and auctioned off for an additional $3,295, with every ball going for at least $300.

Coupled with the over $140,000 netted by the Carolina football program’s participation from the November 14, 2009 game between the Gamecocks and Florida Gators, the athletics department has helped the Wounded Warrior Project raise approximately $200,000.

Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) is an apolitical nonprofit organization whose mission is to honor and empower wounded warriors. WWP serves to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women, to help severely injured service members aid and assist each other and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs.
