LSU’S KIMBERLYN DUNCAN ON PRESEASON WATCH LIST FOR BOWERMAN AWARD
BATON
ROUGE – After attending the presentation ceremony for The Bowerman in
December as one of three finalists following the 2011 season, it came
as no surprise Thursday when Lady Tiger junior sprinter Kimberlyn
Duncan was selected one of 10 athletes with the release of the 2012
women’s preseason watch list by The Bowerman Watch List Committee. Duncan
enters the 2012 season as the defending NCAA Indoor and NCAA Outdoor
champion in the 200-meter dash after emerging as one of world’s premier
performers in the event a year ago. She is just the sixth
female sprinter in NCAA history to sweep 200-meter titles in the same
season and the first Lady Tiger since collegiate record holder Dawn
Sowell in 1989. Duncan was impressive in running a pair of personal
bests of 22.24 outdoors and 22.78 indoors during the 2011 season. By
clocking a winning time of 22.24 in the national final, Duncan set the
low-altitude collegiate record in the event. In addition,
Duncan anchored the Lady Tigers to a national championship in the
4x100-meter relay as she teamed with Kenyanna Wilson, Semoy Hackett and
Rebecca Alexander to run the eighth-fastest time in collegiate history
at 42.64 in the national final in 2011. She also scored eight points
for the Lady Tigers as the NCAA Outdoor runner-up in the 100-meter dash
while setting a wind-legal PR of 11.09. Duncan actually
wrapped up her sophomore season as the scoring champion for the 2011
NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in scoring 20.5
points for the Lady Tigers. A native of Katy, Texas,
joined former Texas A&M standout and 2011 Bowerman recipient
Jessica Beard and Arkansas pole vaulter Tina Sutej as finalists for the
presentation ceremony of the award on Dec. 14 at the 2011 U.S. Track
& Field and Cross Country Coaches Association held in San Antonio,
Texas. Hackett is also receiving preseason recognition as
a contender for The Bowerman in 2012 as she is among four athletes
listed in the “Also Receiving Mention” list included in Thursday’s
announcement. In addition to running the second leg on
LSU’s national championship 4x100-meter relay team a year ago in her
first season as a Lady Tiger, Hackett earned four All-America honors as
one of the nation’s leading sprinters. She was also crowned the SEC
champion in the 100-meter dash en route to capturing last year’s SEC
Commissioner’s Trophy and being named the 2011 SEC Women’s Outdoor
Runner of the Year.
