LSU PREPARING TO TAKE OLE MISS’ BEST SHOT
BATON
ROUGE – You can throw out the records and the rankings when LSU and Ole
Miss get together in football and Saturday will be no exception as the
top-ranked Tigers travel to Oxford to face the 2-8 Rebels.
LSU
continued to prepare for Saturday’s contest here Wednesday at the
Charles McClendon Practice Facility as the Tigers go into what will be
Houston Nutt’s final home game with the Rebels expecting to take Ole
Miss’ best shot. Kickoff between the Tigers and the Rebels is scheduled
for 6 p.m. and the game will be televised on ESPN.
“I like
the way this team works and we had another productive practice today,”
LSU coach Les Miles said. “I like the pieces of the game plan that are
in. We still have a couple more days to prepare, but I like where we
are at this point. I expect us to play well.”
Saturday’s
game marks the second time in its last three trips to Oxford that LSU
will be ranked No. 1 going into the contest. LSU was ranked No. 1 in
2007 when the Tigers posted a 41-24 victory over the Rebels. LSU goes
into Saturday’s game with a 10-0overall mark and a 6-0 league record.
LSU is off to its best start since 1958 when the Tigers claimed the
national title with an 11-0 record.
“I’m certain that we
will get their best effort,” Miles said following Wednesday’s practice.
“I’m also certain that we will play well. I think it’s a great
opportunity to take our guys on the road and have the opportunity to
play well in an opponent’s stadium. I recognize that when you travel as
a representative of LSU, you’re followed by a very large fan base. I’m
guessing that there will be a very strong LSU contingent at the game.
This is a quality opportunity on the road against Ole Miss.”
Ole
Miss will be without its starting quarterback and leading rusher on
Saturday as Randall Mackey and Jeff Scott have been suspended for the
game.
“We’ve studied their offense,” Miles said. “We
expect that there will be pieces of the best of each of their offensive
techniques on display Saturday no matter who will be playing
quarterback or running back. We recognize that there are some guys that
won’t be running those plays, but those plays will still be run.”
The
Tigers will practice again on Thursday followed by a walk-thru on
Friday morning. The Tigers will depart for Memphis on Friday afternoon
where they will stay on Friday night before bussing to Oxford on
Saturday.
