LSU ALL-AMERICAN MICHAEL LAURO SETS PERSONAL BEST AT HAMMERAMA
WAKEFIELD,
R.I. – LSU junior All-American and Rhode Island native Michael
Lauro enjoyed a triumphant return home this past weekend as he set a
new personal best in the hammer throw to claim the men’s open
hammer throw title as part of Hammerama 2011 held at Curtis Corner
Middle School.
A native of Providence, R.I., Lauro won the event on Sunday afternoon
with a top mark of 223 feet in his series to finish exactly one foot
ahead of the mark of 222-0 by Matt Lambley of Leeds, England.
Not only that, but Lauro moved ahead of former Tiger All-American Dave
Paddison into the No. 2 spot in LSU’s all-time outdoor
performance list in the men’s hammer throw. Lauro now trails only
school-record holder and former NCAA champion Walter Henning (239-5) on
LSU’s all-time list.
The Rhode Island product finished in scoring position for the first
time in his collegiate career at the 2011 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track
& Field Championships as he scored three points for the Tigers with
his sixth-place finish in the hammer throw. Lauro set a previous
personal record of 221-3 for his fourth throw of the competition on
June 9 at the NCAA meet held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
Lauro must provide the scoring punch for the Tigers in the throws in
2012 as he will be the program’s top returning performer in the
event area during his senior season.
