LSU GOLFERS AUSTIN GUTGSELL, SANG YI HONORED AS ALL-AMERICA SCHOLARS
FOR 2011
BATON ROUGE
– While the LSU men’s golf program certainly received its
share of recognition for an outstanding 2010-11 campaign on the course,
juniors Austin Gutgsell and Sang Yi have been honored for their
performance in the classroom as Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America
Scholars for 2011.
The LSU tandem was among 138 players in NCAA Division I named Cleveland
Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars and announced by the Golf Coaches
Association of America on Wednesday evening.
In order for a student-athlete to be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon
All-America Scholar status, he must be either a junior or senior
academically while competing at least two full seasons at the
collegiate level. He must also have participated in 70 percent of his
squad’s competitive rounds during the previous season or competed
at the NCAA Championships, finished the year with a scoring average
under 76.0 strokes per round and maintained a minimum cumulative
grade-point average of 3.2 during his collegiate career.
In addition, a student-athlete must also be of high moral character and
in good standing both academically and athletically at his college or
university to receive recognition.
Gutgsell, a Mandeville native who has maintained a cumulative 3.45 GPA
during his college career, made 11 tournament starts for the Tigers in
2010-11 while finishing the season with a 75.45 scoring average.
In October, Gutgsell enjoyed the best performance in his three seasons
with the Tigers as he took home an individual championship for the
first time in his career at the David Toms Intercollegiate at the
Country Club of Louisiana. Gutgsell fired a career-low 10-under par 206
at the Country Club of Louisiana to claim the individual crown en route
to earning Golfweek National Player of the Week honors after the
tourney.
Yi, who has maintained a cumulative 3.40 GPA in three seasons at LSU,
wrapped up his junior season for 2010-11 with a career-low scoring
average of 73.55 strokes per round to finish the campaign as the
team’s third-leading scorer while competing in 12 tournaments.
