No. 10 LSU wins pitcher’s duel in Baton Rouge 1-0 over State
It was a pitcher’s duel
Saturday night in Baton Rouge, as the Mississippi State Bulldogs
(26-11, 2-6 SEC) were just edged out by the 10th-ranked LSU Tigers
(30-7, 6-2 SEC), 1-0. Kat Moore, Olivia Golden and Sarai
Niu each earned a hit in game two of the weekend, with Moore extending
her career-high reached base streak to 12-straight games. The Dogs put
runners on the base paths in four different innings, but the Tigers
were able to keep State at bay. Holly Ward tossed 6.0
innings of work, striking out two and walking three while giving up
just three hits and the game’s lone run being unearned. Ward
kept the Tigers quiet for the first four innings, not allowing a single
runner to cross home plate and giving up only two hits. From the second
to the fourth inning, Ward retired eight batters-in-a-row to keep the
game scoreless. LSU tallied the game’s lone run in the
bottom of the fifth on a two-out RBI single. Ward was able to get out
of the inning without another run scoring a rung up her third 1-2-3
inning in the sixth to finish her night. The Bulldogs got
a pair of runners on in the sixth thanks to a Moore single and a
fielding error on the Tigers. However, LSU’s defense once again held
strong and closed out the game to earn the 1-0 victory.
