Kentucky Rifle Knocks Off No. 6 Nebraska
LEXINGTON,
Ky. – The second-ranked University of Kentucky rifle team used a 4680
to knock off No. 6 Nebraska Sunday at the Buell Armory, with the
Huskers finishing the afternoon with a 4659.
“You’re
going to have your good days and you’re going to have your days where
you have to fight through it,” UK head coach Harry Mullins said. “Today
was one of those days we had to fight through it. Nebraska is a really
good team and it was one heck of a match, I’m proud of how our team
hung in there and pushed through to get the win.”
The
Wildcats held a small edge through kneeling, leading 770-768 and
increased the lead to nine after prone. Nebraska had a small advantage
in standing but wasn’t enough to give the Huskers the lead after
smallbore, with UK ahead 2321-2316.
Seniors Aaron
and Emily Holsopple paced Kentucky through smallbore, with Emily
Holsopple shooting a 583, including a 191 in kneeling, 199 in prone and
193 in standing. Aaron Holsopple followed with a 581, shooting a 195 in
kneeling, 199 in prone and 187 in standing.
Sophomore
Connor Davis and freshman Sonya May were the final two counters to make
up UK’s smallbore score. Davis finished the opening event with a 577,
while May posted a 580.
UK fell behind early in
air rifle, trailing 1176-1169 through 30 shots but used a strong final
30 shots to take the advantage in air rifle, posting a 2359 to
Nebraska’s 2343 to seal the win.
Davis and May led
the way in air rifle, both delivering a 592 as the first two to finish.
May’s 1172 individual aggregate marked the best for a UK counter today.
Emily
Holsopple and Kirby closed out the first relay for UK counters, with
Kirby shooting a 588, while Holsopple shot a 587. Junior Elijah Ellis
competed as an air rifle counter in the second relay and added a 585
for the Wildcats.
As an individual, freshman Jason
Sharbel posted personal best in air rifle and individual aggregate,
shooting a 586 in air rifle and 577 in smallbore.
For
Nebraska, freshman Rachel Martin delivered a team-best 584 in smallbore
and junior Kelsey Hansen posted a team-best 591 in air rifle. The
Huskers’ 4659 bests the team’s aggregate average of 4656 on the year.
“Today
was a good match and I thought good experience for both teams,” Mullins
said. “Hats off to Nebraska, they are a really good team. We brought
the intensity and effort, some things just didn’t fall our way. I
expect the team will be back hard at work this week in practice and
hopefully our numbers will come together next weekend.”
