No. 3 Kentucky Defeats No. 11 Ole Miss
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The
University of Kentucky rifle team defeated No. 11 Ole Miss on Saturday,
shooting a 4670 to the Rebels’ 4611 in Oxford, Miss.
“I
was proud of my team today,” UK head coach Harry Mullins said. “We had
people step up and deliver when we needed it. It’s always good to get a
conference win on the road.”
The Wildcats jumped
out to an early lead, leading 2317 – 2281 following smallbore. Senior
Heather Greathouse led Kentucky in smallbore, shooting a 586, tying her
season high. Junior Emily Holsopple delivered a 581 while freshman
Connor Davis shot a 580.
Kentucky continued to add
it on in air rifle as the Wildcats shot a 2353 to Ole Miss’ 2330. Davis
shot a team-best 594 in air rifle on Saturday, his third consecutive
match breaking the 590 barrier. Greathouse broke the 590 barrier for a
fourth time on the year with a 590.
Junior Aaron Holsopple shot a 585 in air rifle while senior Stacy Wheatley and Emily Holsopple both shot a 584.
Kentucky
was without senior Henri Junghanel Saturday because he is training to
represent Germany in the Bavarian Air Gun Championships in Munich,
Germany. Emily Holsopple, Connor Davis and Elijah Ellis will be heading
to Germany on Sunday for the Bavarian Air Gun Championships.
“The
lineup will look a lot different on Sunday with some heading to the
Bavarian Air Championships,” Mullins said. “This is great opportunity
for some to step in and gain some valuable experience.”
The Wildcats will stay in Oxford to face No. 10 Memphis on Sunday.
“We
have another tough contest Sunday against Memphis,” Mullins said.
“Conferences matches always bring another element and we’re going to
need to be prepared for the challenge.”
