VU cruises past Ole Miss, 79-53 Vanderbilt sweeps the season series with Ole Miss.
NASHVILLE,
Tenn. - The Vanderbilt women's basketball team took control early and
never looked back on Sunday, defeating Ole Miss, 79-53. With the win
the Commodores rise to 15-7, 5-4 in the SEC, while Ole Miss slips to
8-14, 1-8 in the league.
Christina Foggie led Vanderbilt with 22
points, while Tiffany Clarke dropped 14 with eight rebounds. Heather
Bowe and Jasmine Lister each added 11 points, and Bowe also grabbed 8
rebounds.
For Ole Miss, Tia Faleru scored 15 points, while Courtney Marbra and Diara Moore each added 11 points.
Vanderbilt
never trailed in the game, dominating the offensive end in both the
paint and on the perimeter. The Commodores finished the game with 40
points in the paint to the Rebels' 16. Vandy also capitalized on
opportunities consistently throughout the game, with 40 points scored
from 21 Ole Miss turnovers.
After returning from the locker room
at halftime with a 38-17 lead, the Commodores continued their offensive
streak, going on a 16-8 run to start the second half. Two consecutive
layups from Clarke, followed by two consecutive layups from Elan Brown
led to the dagger being delivered by a Gabby Smith 3-pointer at the
14:16 mark, forcing Ole Miss to take a timeout.
Free throws also
played a large role for Vanderbilt. Overall, the team shot 18-20 from
the line, with five Commodores hitting 100% on the game. Foggie again
led the way, shooting 7-7. It marked just the third time this season
Vanderbilt hit at least 90% from the stripe.
Vanderbilt has a
bye on Thursday before returning to action next Sunday, February 10, to
host No. 8/7 Kentucky. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m. CT and the game is
Vanderbilt's annual Pink Out to raise awareness Play4Kay and the Kay
Yow Cancer Fund.
