Team Records and Series Notes

  • This was the season opener for both teams.
  • Kentucky leads the series, 14-9, including 6-3 in games played in Louisville.  The Wildcats have won four in a row vs. Louisville.
  • Kentucky outrushed Louisville, 230-to-190. The team with the most rushing yards has won the last 12 games in the series.
  • UK’s Mike Hartline is now 3-0 versus Louisville as a starter, becoming the first UK QB to go 3-0 as a starter in the Governor’s Cup series.

  • Kentucky opened its 120th season of intercollegiate football.
  • Kentucky won the opening toss and elected to receive.
  • Kentucky is now 82-33-5 in season openers, including 9-15-1 in season openers played away from home.
  • Kentucky has won its fourth-consecutive season opener. It is UK’s longest season-opening win streak since winning eight in a row from 1987-94.
  • Kentucky has won 16 consecutive regular-season non-conference games.
  • Kentucky has won its fourth-consecutive game in the Governor’s Cup race. It marks UK’s longest win streak against the Cardinals since winning seven straight from 1912-1994.
  • Kentucky’s balanced offense totaled 230 rushing yards and 236 passing yards.
  • Kentucky’s 466 yards of total offense was the most since gaining 488 yards in the 2009 opener vs. Miami-Ohio.
  • Kentucky did not turn the ball over for the third time in the last four road games.
  • The Wildcats have won four straight games on the road dating back to the win at Auburn on October 17, 2009. (at Auburn, at Vanderbilt, at Georgia, at Louisville)
  • Kentucky rushed for 230 yards, which is the most rushing yards since running for 308 at Vanderbilt on November 14, 2009.

UK Individual Notes

  • This was Joker Phillips’ first game as head coach of the Wildcats. 
  • Phillips joins Paul “Bear” Bryant, Fran Curci, Bill Curry and Hal Mumme as UK coaches in the modern era who won their first game as head coach of the Cats.
  • With Joker Phillips at Kentucky and Charlie Strong at Louisville, this marks the first time in college football history that two African-American coaches at BCS schools have played in a season opener.
  • Derrick Locke rushed 23 times for 104 yards and scored two rushing touchdowns for the first time in his career. He now has 1,835 rushing yards in his career and ranks 7th on UK’s all-time rushing list. He needs 270 more to tie Artose Pinner (1999-02) for 6th place.
  • Randall Cobb rushed four times for 80 yards and was 1-for-1 for 19 passing yards in the “WildCobb” formation. He also caught two passes for 19 yards as a receiver.
  • Locke gained 148 all-purpose yards. He now has 3,513 yards in his career and ranks 9th on the all-time all-purpose yard list. He needs 69 more to tie Dicky Lyons, Sr. (1966-68) for 8th place.
  • Hartline completed 17-of-26 passes for 217 yards. He now has 2,719 passing yards in his career and ranks 11th on the all-time passing list. He needs 40 more to tie Jerry Woolum (1960-62) for 10th place.
  • Seven different Wildcat receivers caught two or more passes in the game.
  • Joe Mansour kicked off for UK in his first collegiate action. He had three touchbacks.
  • Ryan Tydlacka's 62 yard punt in the 2nd quarter was a career best. Previous best was 59.
  • The 62-yarder was also a Governor Cup record for longest punt. Tydlacka averaged 49.8 yards on four punts.
  • First-time offensive starters for UK: Jordan Aumiller, Chandler Burden (previously started on defense), Matt Smith, Larry Warford
